64 bit RailWorks Stopped Working This Week

Unread postby harrupjl » Fri Jun 17, 2022 8:22 pm

DTG help desk says that 3d party downloads (like from RWA) will cause 64 bit to stop working. Has anyone else experienced this after downloading DLC from RWA? Thanks ps: 32bit RailWorks opens as always.

It's kind of a blanket statement from them. The only content that I have found to cause crashes consistently were workshop items that became corrupted. I had to unsubscribe to them on Steam to prevent them from getting redownloaded and the issue starting over again.

At what point does Railworks 'stop working'? Does it load to the menu? Will it load a scenario?

DTG is full of cr**. I have hundreds of downloads from the library with no issues. Shame on them. Boosted is right . Almost all problems are with workshop items that are busted in one way or another. My suggestion is only d/l one new thing at a time and make sure it works. That way if there are issues you can uninstall them. Remember there is always the verify option to make sure the game is working right.

He shows a blue and yellow security shield attached to the Railworks64.exe within his Railworks folder, solution, create a shortcut on the desktop, open properties, advanced, and check run as administrator. Second option is to lower UAC settings.

Has the error got a number or a comment or what? And does it happen right away or after a bit of time while it's trying to load?

I know a TS User (the one from Kalamazoo) whose Train Sim will not run at all. Click the icon, run on steam, nothing. Uninstalled all the content, did a fresh install twice, several verifies, and nothing. DTG has been unable to rectify and as such there have been no Kalamazoo operating sessions in about 3 p, possibly 4 weeks. He even uninstalled all DLC and 3rd party content. Quite annoying really, especially with no remedy in sight.

The facts are that is is almost certainly something totally outside of the game, otherwise why would thousands of us be playing it daily with no issues? DTG is certainly not responsible for the health and well being of the whole computer. My sister God love her was having all kinds of issues with her computer and when I went to visit ask her when was the last time she de-fragged the system or did she have any other cleanup utilities she said "What? I don't know what those are?" I asked when was the last time she shut the thing down and restarted it and she asked "Why would I do that?"
Enough said I'm sure you get my drift. Something a lot of people don't know is that uninstalling a program rarely gets rid of it all and those bits and pieces left behind are often what causes the program to behave badly to begin with. Most likely your problem is related to running out of usable ram. IOBIT software has several good utilities for cleaning up systems one I use regularly is a little gadget that monitors RAM and CPU usage and just has this tiny thing up in the right hand top of the screen that shows you what's going on all the time and one click on the little icon cleans the RAM out and prevents things like the game crash when you are starting the game repeatedly a whole bunch of times like when I am painting.
In any event that's enough for you to explore and think about for now.

One thing that I regularly do is to set my programs to "Run as administrator". I've run into issues at times where running a program as a regular user will not allow the program to access some Windows files. Running as administrator seems to cure those issues for me. It's simple to do. Just navigate to your RailWorks64.exe file under..

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks

Then right click on the file name and select Run as Administrator from the popup menu. Next time you run Train Simulator 64 bit, you'll get a popup asking if you want the program to make changes to your system. You'll see the RailWorks.exe program name in the popup. Just click the Yes button and hopefully you're off to the races.

Otherwise, Buzz is correct in spending some time cleaning up your system, applying Windows patches, and just making sure there is enough space on the drives and memory in the system. I ran into a similar problem with Train Simulator not starting back on my older PC. I unsubscribed to all workshop scenarios and that fixed the issue for me.

I still have a problem with RailWorks 64 not running just the start up Screen then nothing. However RailWorks 32 runs perfectly. Any thoughts? everything worked perfectly until the update.

Mine is working fine. Never had any problems since I've been running it for years.

Hi Dave,

To begin, I'm going to presume the problem is on your end, rather than the developer; but I'll get to them later.

I see in your specs that you have an HP, so like many "store-bought" pc's, it likely shipped with a pre-installed operating system which may have a few underlying settings that might prohibit some functionality.

Try this: Locate the 64 bit exe file in the RW root folder, right click on it and in the resulting context menu, left click on "run as administrator".

If this is successful, then return to the 64 bit exe, right click and select properties; select the "Compatibility" tab and check the box for "run the program as an administrator".

If this fails, then I would suspect there is some sort of corruption with the 64 bit exe, since the 32 bit exe is fully functional.

I hesitate to ask this because it's so obvious; but do you have any backups that you could replace (overwrite) your 64 bit exe with? (make a copy of the original first). Even if it's an older version and it works, you should be able to do a "file verification" in the Steam menu in order to update it. In fact, you might try doing a "file verify" before proceeding with anything else. Lastly, there is the dreaded re installation routine, but I think that's too extreme to consider at this point; at least until you've given other folks some time to see your post and offer their solutions or ideas.

Other than that, I'm at a loss, other than suspecting it may be something with the exe in the update. I have not applied the update yet, but after browsing the forums, I've read some accounts of incompatibilities with dlc's and such. If there is something the updated exe doesn't like about you OS, then I would wait for the developers to get things fixed and run 32 bit in the meantime. Be sure to submit a support ticket so the developers are aware of your situation.

Good luck and keep us posted.

That seems to be pretty great suggestions to try. In the unlikely event that doesn't work make sure and get back here with what's happening and we'll go from there.

I still can't get the 64 Bit to work. Still trying to find the cause. I think it is something in Windows 11 that isn't right. It isn't easy but working on it in my spare time. Tried all suggestions.
