I use scale drawings along side actual dimensions, then basically draw it out in 2D in Autodesk Inventor, extrude it, chamfer edges per actual angles, cut holes where need be, put doors, hinges, grilles, etc.
The M420 was built in 2 days minus the trucks, wheels, and interior.

Not too much different than what I can pull/push/stretch in 3DC. Unfortunately the devil is in the details and that is where I get bogged down (that and texturing,,, (and animation... (and blueprinting...))).

Details are fairily easy, its the textures, which I'm sure are easier now that I make the whole model 3D (doors, hinges, etc) but still.
I hate texturing, and I have no animation experience in 3DS Max, or blueprinting for Railworks.

For the blueprinting you can use the tutorial on my blog.

You might be able to translate the animation section from 3DC to 3DS... not sure if it will though.

The fact I neglected to put holes in the cab for windows and stuff really irks me. I need to go back and do that. !*not-ok*!

You need to punch them out and then create a double sided face so you can place a glass texture on it.

Ahh, my friend Nathan Haydt works for them. Does mechanic work, and just happened to have 2045 in for wheel work I believe.

So is anyone willing to make this bad boy runnable? I can handle making an internal view cab interior* but the one you view from outside, not so much.
*i wouldnt have the foggiest idea how to animate parts though.

I might try, not sure though because the last time I tried to import something in from 3DS to 3D Crafter it crashed the program.

But I have a tutorial to help me get it into the game though if I can import it successfully and I've been learning animating.

But the good news is this is one of my favorite diesel locomotives and I have actual cab photo's for making the cab.

Also, could you handle for the finished model to be freeware by the way, of course with 9/10th of the credit going to you.
