It really is not possible to make an AI controlling the train, but I can not control it?
That's the prime choice you have to do: whether you wanna the train controlled by game (when you are not driving it, game will take the control); or whether you wanna the train as a static consist.
In the second case you can still ride and control the train, at any time, and when you leave it, it will stop and remain stopped at the location you left it. Maybe that's what you are aiming to. Give it a try.

Machinist, i see your profile photo(e você é brasileiro também né?) It is one of the locomotives of Brazil, Minas Gerais, São João del Rei, right? I know, because I am Brazilian and I live in São João del Rei, the only city in the world that has the 2-8-0 and 4-6-0, and 4-4-0 American History, gauge 76mm.
No wonder I love steam locomotives and rail simulator game since 2008, I now works for the rail, because I grew up here, since childhood, loved playing on the tracks, the locomotive whistled 68.
It's too good, so I have this passion for trains, because my town has this story. Many of my family were part of EFOM - Estrada Ferroviária Oeste de Minas. My uncles, grandparents worked in construction, and also on the railroad. Anyway, it's a great honor to live here!
Regards, Manoel Victor.
WOW very nice!

I didn't noticed your avatar before, and due to your name I thought you were Portuguese, not a brazooka!
Yep I've already been at there and ride the train, my dream is run one of the engines (as I've already done in Porto Velho, with the historical Madeira-Mamoré steam), maybe some day, eh? When a Baldwin descendent came to Brazil (I guess in 70's years) he stated it was the largest and well preserved narrow gauge's Baldwin's Steams collection in the World. The small route (according to the museum release) is still the oldest narrow gauge in continous operation in the World, as it was created about 1875, IIRC, same layout etc.
Hope to meet you at São João Del Rey, someday!

I would be very glad if you invite me to ride the cab as a foamer, at least!
Um grande abraço (a big hug, as we say in Brazil).
