Hello, and some rants/advice

Postby up_8677 » Tue May 15, 2012 9:44 pm

Just thought I would introduce myself, and ask for some advice. I used to play MSTS quite a bit, but I lost my discs to it so I hadn't played a railroad sim for years till I decided to try TS2012. Most of my games are first person shooters. *!lol!* I'm a railfan in real life too.

I really like the improvements over MSTS in terms of physics and visual glitz, but I am pretty disappointed at the way some details seem to have been completely ignored. *!sad!*

1. Broken multi function displays in locomotives so equipped. I really despise the HUD thingy, but I have to use it because the MFDs are useless.
2. Additional units in a multiple unit consist have crews in then??? Seriously?
3. Cabooses on modern US railroads? WoW.
4. SD70ACe engineer's side walkway disappears when looking backwards from the cab window.
5. Horn sounds are really lame. Same sample used outside the locomotive as inside the cab? The ACe's beautiful K5LLA is ruined from outside with that air hissing noise.

I know that there is quite a bit of flexibility in tweaking things in TS games; is there any way that these issues can be fixed? Best place to find documentation/help? I'm a CS student, so I like to pretend I know my way around coding/scripting. *!lol!* However, I have had issues finding information on how to go about these things.

Thanks! :D

Welcome and i would like to answer some of your questions.

1. Yeah, only one loco has a 90% functional display and thats the p42dc

2. Third party repaints and locos usualy include a version without a cab but note that the rsc sd75 has it too, first for rsc!

3. We like to relive the glory days? Idk about them cabeese lol

4.known issue and will be fixed whenever they update it for rw3

5. Rsc encourages us to change the horns to what we like, there are many great options avalable here in our file library.

Hi, there is a HUD adaptation done by Marleyman available for free. Does away with the Lego buttons. Check out Railworks Tools, donationware. Wouldn't be without it.

Thanks! I suppose I will just have to wait for an update. How often do they release patches?

I've been playing around with changing up the sounds for the ES44AC; I got a much better horn for it working, but the engine sounds didn't seem to "take". Sounds more like an old diesel truck than a locomotive. *!lol!*

RW_Tools. You can get it here:

http://www.rstools.info/rw_tools.html

3. Cabooses on modern US railroads? WoW.

The caboose may be rare, but they still do appear on modern trains occasionally:

LOL. That doesn't sound too promising...anyway I downloaded the tools and I've gone about fixing some of my pet peeves. ES44AC now sounds exactly like the real thing, thanks to Aidan's sounds. Having some issues with the horn though. I'm following his readme exactly, but one of the lines that is supposed to be changed in the .bin file does not exist...

Now I just need to save all this stuff so the next time steam updates something I can replace all my changes. *!lol!*

I have two folders in Documents just for RW. One is for DLC, the other is for mods. Steam will revert any mods you make even if you just do a file verify (which you may need to do already if you have missing default files) I also recommend either a second internal hard drive, or an external USB drive, to do backups in. I do a weekly backup using Acronis (incremental backups) of my "steamapps" folder and my Documents folder. I had to reload everything earlier this year when I lost one of the hard drives in my RAID 0 array. (I only have 150 games thru Steam)

RSC usually just responds with a "canned" reply to any bug reports you send. They do listen, but they don't have a huge staff so they really can't personally reply to every question.

I have a number of other drives in my machine, so I've been saving all the stuff I've downloaded. !!*ok*!!

Oh and for the curious, I built my computer myself. i7-2600K overlocked to 4.5 GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, GTX580 1.5 GB, 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz, 160 GB SSD, 2x1TB HDDs in RAID 1, 1 x250 GB HDD for extra stuff. Runs most everything extremely well...TS2012 is the first thing I've thrown at it that doesn't do all that well sometimes. *!lol!*

Yeah, I did see that. I corrected the issue after reading it. !*YAAA*! It's a rather easy fix if you know what registry key to look for (all you have to do is set each instance of said key to zero, which means zero cores can be "parked").

I've since found numerous videos of cabooses in use. I'll eat my words there. *!embar*!

They go especially good with a little Worcestershire Sauce, garlic and some AI Steak Sauce. *!greengrin!*
