60 days feels like 60 minutes.

It really is not a very long time at all.

I just pulled the SD40 to bits! looking round the room at a bunch of bolts!

I have one additional question regarding the new lights:

Will it be possible to make these new lightsources animated? I mean can they be set into rotation so that we can include mars lights into locomotives?

I hope this means replacing the default SD40-2 with the improved shape of the SantaFe and BN/BNSF pack and putting a new UP and black livery on it.

Derek, will it only be possible to get super-elevation by laying track after the update comes out?

Is this cab sway merely a thing built into the locootives? Or will it be a result of the locomotive actually hitting physical kinks in the track? If it's the latter, then I can see people having a lot of fun making the worst track imaginable.

Someone mentioned the South Australian Eyre Peninsula system on train-sim.com being infamous for its track 'quality'. But there's a stretch of line here in SA which made the EP look good, and it closed around 30 years ago. Two words - Old Ghan.

According to a myth, there was a fault found with the traction motors inside the newer locomotives that worked the Old Ghan line. but it was only apparent when they reached over 15MPH. The fault was only discovered when they were moved to the Eyre Peninsula, over ten years after entering service.

I wonder whether it will be possible to represent this line at its finest in RW3? What would be incredible would be a dynamic build up of water in the creeks during some torrential rain, forcing you to abandon the work order in the middle of nowhere, so that the water doesn't stuff up the traction motors, as you traverse one of the many creekbed deviations built around flood damaged bridges.

One can dream....

I think Passenger Car & Freight Car swaying is another great idea to have. TS2012 is going to be a hot sim for the year.

It was said that you can also see the sway from the outside.

I'm not sure if this is the answer to your question or not, but I did read that the track will be such that you can set the degree of roughness/smoothness, so that may be what affects the sway. I think it will also affect the max speed limit too.
I don't know if this setting will be part of the track rule as a whole or if you'll be required to make the setting per track section. Per track section would be my choice, but I'm not the one making that call. *!greengrin!*

I've read up on how the track is rendered in RW2, and it'd be safe to assume that the physical rail shape render be affected. This could have small ramifactions involving framerates, but for the effect it enables, it will be worth it (going by the above).

Well if this is the case, it will finally give some meaning to the various restricted speed zones that mostly exist currently as mere novelties. A nice addition would be the headlights at night time illuminating the kinks in the rails ahead.

Hypothetically, very short track sections could be much worse than the line on average, as long as the tolerance before the train derails is reasonable. Although at the roughest setting, one would expect that a derailment would be imminent above about 5MPH. This setting would be ideal for track in sidings that hasn't been used for 5 years, or track that has been affected by heat.

In the case of the old Ghan line, you'd expect the roughness to be set at about 80% on average, with very short sections encroaching on 100%. There should also be a setting that alters a locomotive or railcar's proneness to rough riding. Even on well maintained track, the Brill railcars over here were prone to very rough riding. I'm not sure if a setting in the track section could enable this. Probably asking too much there.

A new video of Railworks 3 will come on Thursday. The "L" symbol lets me assume that it will have something to do with Lights. (EDIT: Haha, Erik was faster. :D )
