FEF-3 smoke deflector and mars light removal?

I've seen a few picture's of the smokebox fef-3 with it's "elephant ears" and mars light removed from the locomotive and i was wondering if that was a user made mod or if it's a feature of the model?

It's a feature of the model. It depends on the number you set for the loco in the scenario. The details can be found in the manual.
