I may have lost my sense of humour, but this is FAR from F.B. Correct me, but the English word COMPATION still exist.

Hope you heal quickly, but I know how slow hand/finger injuries heal.... I smashed my thumb in a switchstand. It went black and the nail died and fell off. It took several months for my thumb to get back to normal. I never went in to get x-rays but I think I had fractured it...

Well my thumbnail is totally black. My thumb is twice the size it should be. I could not even get my jeans fastened. Could hardly sleep last night as I kept bumping my thumb. Forefinger and middle finger are stiff. I can not grab my mouse or even a cigarette. I called off work this morning. I feel bad about that as Memorial Day is right around the corner. I hate using my left hand to type.

Hoping you have a full and speedy recovery. I know what it's like to not be able to sleep due to pain - many years ago I tore the meniscus in my knee playing baseball and could not find any position to rest that did not hurt to high heaven. I guess my Dr. was ahead of his time in regard to prescribing pain killers - I got none. Aspirin and ibuprophen didn't really help much.

Perhaps you should check your sense of humor and your spelling. It's compassion and I was just trying to lighten things a bit since there ARE a huge number of posts like this on FB and Bob has always made fun of it. I too hope Bob the best on dealing with this. I've had a few injuries like this myself and know what it's like to try to cope. On top of everything my friend Bob doesn't drink and we all know what wonderful pain killing effect alcohol has on ones body.

I stand corrected on the atrocius spelling; as I always state, I'm illiterate in two languages.

My boss made me go to the emergency room today. No broken bones or cracks, like I tried to tell him. However they burned a tiny hole in my thumbnail to let the blood out. Well it has been leaking for 3 hours now. I changed the band aid 5 times already. The tool they used was cool. 2 tiny pins at the end of plastic handle and he just touched to my nail for less than a second. Did not feel a thing then the blood started coming out. The swelling has dropped as well. Thumb and fingers still are sore. Extremely hard to type. Backspacing a lot :)

And Buzz I would not know if this is like FB conversations as I have not been there at least 6 years. And I know you are just teasing. I have no use for FB. This place is where I do my social activities and the other forum on the dark side except I don't really have friends there yet.

That happened to my father aboard ship, back in the mid-'60s. The corpsman unbent the end of a paperclip and heated it red with an alcohol lamp, such was the state of technology at the time.

Based on this, and a few similar things that have happened to me, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that it's going to hurt like h*ll for a while, and you're going to lose the nail. The good news is that the nail will grow back unless the nail bed is badly injured, which from your description, doesn't appear to be the case.

In the meantime, you will need to keep that thumb especially well protected, especially once the nail falls off. Perhaps they have some sort of hard plastic guard you can slip on once the swelling goes down. I'd also ask the doctor about prescription strength ibuprofen to mitigate the worst of the pain: the less pain you're fighting, the quicker you'll heal.

In the meantime, get used to the idea of light - or at least lighter - duty: you owe it to skilled hands such as yours.

Hi mate...

!!**sorry**!! to hear the news...

Just wanted to chime in here and wish you a speedy recovery. Having been injured myself at work (I took a dive down a set of stairs; thankfully only a broken nose and injured right shoulder, and I didnt even break the coffee cup I was carrying !**duh*!! ) It is at this time I think of the dysfunctional US health system, when people really need it. There shouldn't have been a second thought about getting treatment. Here at least, it is mandatory, because the employer is legally liable - treatment, rehab and paid time off until cleared as medically fit to resume normal duties.

Hope you feel better soon

!!*ok*!!

!*cheers*!

Just to clear up the record. The employer here in the US is legally liable under our workmen compensation laws which is probably why Bob's boss made him go get checked out. The US system is not nearly as dysfunctional as you read in the press particularly when it come to people who work for a living. Any person in this Country can walk into a emergency room in almost every hospital and cannot be refused treatment. All Bob's medical costs should be covered under his employers REQUIRED work comp insurance.
