[WIP] C&O GP9 Repaint

Unread postby styckx » Thu Jun 09, 2011 9:43 pm

Has begun. On a roll with Geeps (Conrail pack uploaded here) so this seems like the next logical choice. These will be static number units.

Awesome. Just inquiring, is there gonna be a "throw back" C&O unit (like the PRR unit in your CR pack)? Or all in the Chessie scheme?

I'm self admitted not terribly familar with my Chessie history.. Maybe you (or Tori) could help me out here.

There are C&O and B&O Chessie System labeled schemes, then this even older ones you showed.. Is that all the variants (that the gp9s wore) ?

I kind of want to get all my eggs together while I'm still weaving the basket. :) I always loved the Chessie System livery and this Geep is the perfect canvas to FINALLY be able to knock some out.

So any help and critique is encouraged here, as again, I'm really unfamilar with this Railroad other than it as a kick butt livery. :)

I'll be HAPPY to help anyway I can, but I am not the loco expert. You may want to find out if there were any WM (Western Maryland) Chessies.

As I know the story, it goes roughly like this.... The C&O and B&O started getting chummy in the early 60's and behind closed doors the first traces of the Chessie System began. WM was in financial trouble at the time and teamed up with the B&O. I don't know the details of how they worked together. Around 1970, the Chessie System name was becoming public knowledge and the combining of the companies was formally underway. It is after this time that you will find Rulebooks titled for both the C&O and B&O and this is when Chessie System paint began appearing on the Alleghany. The book I have is dated 1969. By that time there is little to no mention of the WM in my neighborhood. Dad spoke of it like it was a subsidiary of the B&O.

I saw occasional GP9's painted in Chessie colors but how I remember them most was in various C&O paints. As with many railroads, the GP9 was one of the most popular during that era on the C&O. I remember that they pulled the Greenbrier sub every week until the mid 70's. When the Greenbrier was abandoned in 1978, they were using something like a GP40 (I can't say for sure) on that train. By then, I rarely saw a GP9, but the few I did were in Chessie paint. I suspect they were still in use in plenty elsewhere, but since there was no Ronceverte yard engine and no Greenbrier sub, there was nothing for their small size to do here. From then till now, I've seen nothing here on the mainline but big power road units. I do remember seeing them run as yard switchers in Clifton Forge up through the '80's. Some in C&O paint, some in Chessie, all looking very dirty and neglected.

This is the history ONLY as I know it looking out my window and through my study of the Alleghany. As I've often found, the Alleghany sub was not the place to commonly see "foreign" names (including B&O and WM) or antiquated equipment so I know that my knowledge is limited. More integration could be found in the region of the old B&O mainline (Northern VA, MD, PA).

Not much detailed info, but maybe this offers some perspective. Looking forward to watching the progress on these!

Chessie System Inc. (February 26, 1973) was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio, Baltimore and Ohio, and the Western Maryland.
Each railroad continued to exist as it's own entity but used the Chessie System paint as they belonged to the holding group. Before 1973 the WM had it's own schemes.
The B&O (which actually was the majority stockholder in the C&O and WM) and C&O scheme look so much alike because around 1963 the C&O and B&O started to combine routes, motive power, rolling stock, facilities, etc. Each railroad kept their logos on locomotives and rolling stock, Capitol Dome on the B&O and "For Progress" on the C&O. By 1973 the "new" company was ready for a name. Enter Chessie System Inc.

The above info, is, as far as I know correct and about all I know about Chessie (despite my username I'm a SP and DRGW person).

Thanks both! I'll do my best, and like the Conrail pack am going to do a bit here and a bit there as it's much less taxing on my brain. We'll see where it leads.. The Conrail pack was just supposed to be two engines, then I got on a roll the final day and it ended up into a 7 pack. !*roll-laugh*!

Oh yeah, I didn't forget about this, it's still sitting around. I'll probably throw it in as a separate RWP for those who have Michael Stephens PRR pack.

Awesome choice Bill! !!*ok*!!

Chessie System is easily one my top 5 favorite liveries.

Wish I could give you more Chessie history, but pretty much everything I know has been said already. Though I did come across this in a search:

All the information you need for the C&O/B&O.
No guessing,rumors, or "as I remember" non-sense.
Just facts.

Most of their research resources require purchase or a visit to their office in Clifton Forge, darnit. While I certainly support the organization, I was a little shocked when they told me recently that research assistance is available at $50 per hour.
