New Patch for Performance Issues

Drop your shadows down to medium you will get a boost. And not really notice the difference in visuals. If you play in the Autumn (Misty) you can turn the shadows all the way off as there are not many things shadowed in the mist. I get a 20 fps increase with no shadows. I think this is where they need to optimize.

Shadows are almost always the trouble maker in any graphics engine.

Apparently, since I was not an original beta tester, I cannot access the update. Hopefully when it goes public, I will see some improvement.

I was not in beta but can use the betas on steam. Library, right click TSW, properties, beta tab. 15fps gain for me personally.

No go, it wants a code. does anyone have a code to share?

You don't need a code if you can select it. Close that window and restart steam if it doesn't download right away. It should now say u2tb after Train Sim World in your game library.

Well apparently the new beta installed. In steam the game is listed with a suffix u2tb ... but it did not improve my frame rates. I went into settings and turned all the fancy stuff like shadows etc off, and that still didn't improve the fps. What did improve the fps was uncoupling the mile long string of cars behind the engine. I got a 5 fps improvement and the fps actually flashed in the 20s for a second ever once in awhile.

I think the best thing for me to do is just turn off the fps indicator and enjoy the game.

I finally did that too.

When despite the seemingly low fps the game plays smoothly and doesn't stutter, you might as well enjoy it.

I do, since my TSW rig isn't capable of more than 20 fps on the settings that provide my eyes with the prettiest pictures. On the AMD rigs there is still occasional stutter and white flashes, and changing views sometimes takes a little time.

Perhaps we expected too much of UE4, the promised all singing, all dancing game engine?

The advice to reduce settings is hopefully only a temporary stop gap measure? No person's CPU and GPU are running at 100% right? So there are still lots of CPU cycles being unused.
There is still lots of work to do for DTG in optimising the game and perhaps turn it into a true railroad simulator, for any additional functionality has to be squeezed out of that same UE4 game engine.

World rendering is what UE4 is designed for, the implementation of railroad stuff is purely in the hands of DTG designers and artists. And a lot of it the operational stuff is scripted, so they need good programmers too.

After playing TSW for a week now, I would have liked some radical departures from the past of TSX. Most of all in dispatching/routing, I can do with a better substitute of the "9" 2D track display.
I also don't like the present use of mouse and keyboard to move around, I'd rather have the choice to use keyboard only in 6 DOF mode (6 degrees of freedom).
WASD to control your body, the arrow keys to control your head and automatic mounting/descending of locomotive stepwells and opening of doors.
Some mouse double clicks to sit down/stand up wouldn't go amiss either, as the use of the scroll wheel when moving controllers.

PS: here is my crude performance comparison that Imnew requested:
Code: Select all
A rough test of the static Q353 view 8 is like this:
gaming laptop I7 2.6 GHz 970M = 9-11 fps 1920*1080
4 GHz AMD FX4100 980Ti = 11-12 fps 1920*1200
4 GHz AMD FX8100 980Ti = 14-15 fps 1920*1200
4 GHz I7700K 1080GTX = 34 fps 2560*1080
All have 16 GB of RAM

Are AMD FX CPU's really that bad in TSW?
I want to replace both AMD's with Intel I5 or perhaps AMD Raizen by the end of spring. But until Raizen's are proven performers in TSW and other games, I'll wait.

Head slap moment !DUH!

I realized that with my rebuilt computer, I had signed up for an iDrive account and have been backing up my files to the cloud. This morning I ran TSW before starting the iDrive again and found that I was running in the 20s for FPS. I am happy now.

I'm not sure that our experiences are similar, but before I start TSW I stop all other running programs or services that show up in my "hidden icons" trove, such as cloud drives, NVIDIA (which keeps loading itself back in), etc. TSW runs much better without that competition.
