Constant Crashing!!!!!!

Unread postby Bananimal » Sun Oct 25, 2015 9:27 pm

As the title suggests, 2016 is constantly crashing on me. I added a few reskins of the RS11. Specifically the SP skins for the steam version. I have checked and double checked the installation. They worked before TS2016. They show up fine in the Quickbuild editor and I can build a consist, no problem. When the scenario loads after about 3 minutes, I get the engine sounds and a black screen. Behind the black screen is a dmp error message. That is just one scenario. Many of the RS11 repaints are failing for me. However, the MP ones work fine. I don't understand it at all. I was sure to download only those for the Steam version as that is what I have installed even though I bought the VR version too.

Then, I get random dumps when in the world editor. I can't even place rail cars in scenarios without getting kicked out. That is bad enough, but what is worse is that it takes approximately 4 minutes to get back into the editor only to get kicked out again. And that is running on a PC with a CPU speed of 4.5Ghz, Dual GTX 980s and the sim is installed on an SSD. I feel for the people running this slug on a mechanical HDD.

Has anyone else tried the SP RS11 skin? Can you report any issues with them running in 2016? It could be an nVidia driver issue, even though I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest versions clean.

I sure hope that DTG guts this pig of complexity for the UR4 engine version. There is just way to much complicated junk in TS2016. When I come home from work, I want to drive trains, not spend hours on end trying to figure out how to ad an area marker. Or even harder, trying to figure out how to remove one. Dealing with stupid things that have nothing to do with the enjoyment of running trains. I just want to drive trains. !DUH!

Let me start out by saying your rant against DTG is a bit excessive since this locomotive runs fine for me and I'm sure most of us or we would have heard about it before now. Have you tried uninstalling this and then re-installing this to see if the file has become corrupted for some reason? Looking at your computer I can't think of any reason why anything should take three or four minutes to load since most stuff on my computer which isn't as fancy as yours rarely takes more than thirty or forty seconds to load anything.

Something is broken, no doubt. I'm not a noob when it comes to reskin installations. Been with RailWorks and every iteration thereof from day one. My ranting is a direct result of my having endured frustration for years ya know? *!lol!*

One thing I'm getting ready to do is make a copy of the MP folder, swap the textures and see what I get.

In the interim, here's the logmate crash. it is repeatable, and it happens on many of the RS11 reskins after a clean install of TS2016 and the RS11 skins in question. Like I said though, some of them work.

Just for kicks, try down clocking your CPU to 4GHZ even and use only one GTX980 not two in SLI then report back.
Is anything else overclocked like RAM or the chipset?

What are you using for CPU cooling?
It sounds like something is unstable and TS can really bring that to the surface.

Oh yes... how could I forget this.
Are you on Win 10. The newer drivers required with Win 10 are unstable in SLI mode... One reason I haven't gone to Win 10 yet.
GPU drivers combined with Win 10 mandatory updates are causing hell, including black screens ect while gaming.
New build. i7-7700k, MSI Z270 Gaming M5 Mobo, Hyper 212 Evo, Corsair DDR4 3200 Mhz RAM, Klipsch Pro Mediea 2.1 Speakers, Samsung 850 Evo SSD, HAF XM Case, Asus Strix GTX 1070 and Cooler Master Storm XT Keyboard.

Nah, not running in SLI. Even tried testing today with yanking out a GPU and running one. Problem persists. TS doesn't support SLI anyway as far as I knew.

Did find the issue though. I copied and replaced these 5 files in each failing RS11 skin simulation folder from the RS11\Simulation folder and all is well.

DynamicBrakeEffortVsSpeed.dcsv
Engine Simulation.out
EngSim BP.bin
EngSim BP.xml
TractiveEffortVsSpeed.dcsv
TractiveEffortVsThrottle.dcsv

Apparently, there is some funky stuff going on under the hood in TS2016. The Logmate inidicates it is looking for the engine simulation.lua in the DLC RS11 folder. That file does not exist in a clean install on my system. I have many other assets that are borked that I need to sift through and nail down. It is a mess. All for upgrading to the latest and greatest TS engine.

Secondly, it was failing loading the tractive effort dcsv files, so I replaced them. these files are packed in the reskin. How the SP skin is working for you buzz, I have no clue as from my findings, a clean install of TS 2016 and a clean/fresh install of the skin from the RWA library fails every time for me.

BTW, my install is 123GB big. Lots of stuff to break when upgrading. It does get old after a while. My re-install folders are kept immaculate and all were tested for functionality in TS2015. So, that leaves me to get irritated with DTG every time they roll out a new/magic version of TS. I've been down this road many times with them. I've earned the right to smack them upside the old noggin from time to time. *!lol!* I mean, you get to a point with a 123GB modded install that the effort to fix all of the problems after each upgrade requires more effort than reasonable. I could see if I had a few problems, I have a boatload. The last week has been spent scouring the forums for answers instead of driving trains. I gotta say, even though it is outdated, the MSTS folder/file structure was much easier to deal with from a mod perspective. Everything was neat and you knew exactly where to find the issues. And my install for that is 157GB. It runs like a champ.

I had no such problem with the upgrade to TS2016.
Don't forget you get updates through Steam, and that doesn't alsways work 100%.
You should verify your local files in the Steam client.

About the lua file, don't get misled by the message. The .lua file is not provided with the RS11, but the Engine Simulation.out file is, and that's the same. So the message actually means neither the .lua nor the .out file, which you fixed by copying over the .out file.

Also you have duplicate scenario GUIDs. You should fix that.

Thanks. I usually skip over my reinstall of scenarios, but ran the reinstall anyway. Now I remember why I was skipping that folder. Too many issues with some older payware scenarios.

The VBS Script fails. Even though I redirected it to my RW folder on drive E:, it looks to be trying to find serz.exe on D:

Just a quick comment about clean installs. I backed up my entire 2015 file before 2016 came out however I just let Steam do it's thing on the update then later bought the money version so there were no changes made to most of the existing content. I'm still on win7 my RW folder is 188 GB so it is quite large. I am all the way back on driver version 344.11 because taking the advice of one of the old timers on here Arizona Chris "If it ain't broke don't fix it" when it comes to drivers. I tried some of the newer ones and things kept crashing on me. Sound familiar?
In any event I certainly share your frustration however I don't think 2016 in itself is your problem. I have hundreds of hours in game since the update and find it to be at least as stable as 2015 if not better. As you well know just one or two little things can cause big problems. Keep telling us what you find and good luck. !!det!!
