I like to go for the obvious and simpler solution:
Just move the "3" camera's center of rotation from the center of the last car to the end of the last car.

I think that the problem with that is that each piece of rolling stock's center of rotation is probably defined in its model, not according to its position in any given train.

Except the 3 camera sometimes shows the locomotive end of the train, and cars also are directional so which end is the "end"?

The obvious answer is to use the centre of rotation of the *coupler*, which is worth some thought.

The game know which is the end, because the "6" camera works (coupler view).

thinking of that, would it be possible to mod the 6 camera and move it so its along the side of the car looking back?

I almost never use the 6 view, but I recall that it can be manipulated to give a side view of the coupler, but that view is fixed, in the sense that it cannot be rotated horizontally or zoomed in and out. If I'm correct about this, could the camera that provides that view be modified to allow something very like what is being discussed here?

Here's a short video that depicts the side coupler view in use:

Ah, I never thought of this. The coupler view isn't too useful, so I wonder if the camera could be raised a little and rotated back, to give the idea of riding on the rear of the train...
