Can't stop crashing!

Unread postby kcs_fan » Mon Feb 23, 2015 10:55 pm

Maybe someone can help me. I put down TS 2014 for a while to pursue other things and came back to it this past weekend, and it's now TS 2015. The game loads, I can choose a sceneario, start it and within three minutes, the game crashes and I get a black screen. I have verified the game cache a number of times, running in administrator mode. Every time, the game tells me that it has restored files numbering in the thousands. Eg. 1074 files on the last verification. I set all of the graphic adjustable settings at their minimum and still no luck. I have a really fast computer, with a decent graphics card. I have not had a crashing problem ever, even running in the max settings. I love this game and I want to continue badly! Someone please help! Thanks! !*hp*!

Try lowering your graphics settings.

Dru if you got 1074 the last time, you need to run it again until you get zero. Only then will everything be good. If that doesn't fix it get back here and we'll go to the next step. I have one question though. Are you trying to run the same route/scenario each time or have you tried different ones?

Yes, I lowered my graphics settings. And yes, I chose a different sceneario every time. It crashes on all of them that I have tried, at least 10 different purchased ones and one custom route.

You didn't answer my other question. Did you run the verify until you added no files?

Buzz456, Yes, I verified until it told me that all files were verified successfully. I must have performed the function ten times. When it finally gave me a response that did not include a number of files restored, I tried to run the game again. Crashed three minutes in. I'm getting really discouraged at this point.

Run Logmate from your Railworks folder then start TS when it crashes logmate should have what caused the crash. If not to long you could copy and paste the results here and maybe give someone a clue what is happening. Another option is if you have another HD or partition do a new install on that. I had to do something similar last May after an update when TS wouldn't start, I installed Steam and TS on another drive. Saved me from pulling all my hair out.

What route and what scenario are you trying to run?
What routes do you have according to NameMyRoute.exe (in the Railworks folder)?

What does RW_Tools say about your broken route?

The first error points to a missing template of sorts. These templares reside in the route's asset collection.
But without knowing what route is broken, we don't know where the asset collection folder is.

Create a folder "Bad Routes" or something likewise under Railworks/Content.
Move the route folder that seems to give the error (note the large series of numbers from NameMyRoute.exe) from Routes into that Bad Routes folder, and try to run a default route.
Move any route that won't load out of the way into that Bad routes folder, after so much verifications at least the default routes should run.

When the culprit route has been found, move it back into Routes and try to edit it. When you can edit that route, basic dependencies have been met. Then we can find the route's asset collection and look for missing files there.

When a certain scenario seems to be broken, it could be some rolling stock is missing or imcomplete, a piece of scenery included in the scenario, or what else. Here RW_Tools also is a helpful tool.

ALL routes, purchased or custom built are crashing, not just the game but my computer. I have to re-start after every crash. And I'm sorry to say, everything you said is a bit over my head. I have RW tools but have only used it to customize some assets, like putting a name on a depot or a railroad logo on a freight car. I have never had a problem running any sceneario on any route until the last few days. It had been probably four months or so since I had opened the game and tried to run a route. As far as going in and trying to "edit" a sceneario, that would be about ten levels above my pay grade due to my lack of PC and software knowledge.

Is there a simple method to just un-install and re-install without having to re-purchase all that I have bought?

UPDATE: Thanks for the tip you gave me Kanawha. I am going to try and run one of the few routes that did not show an error when I went to "Name My Route". Also sent you a PM with the information. Maybe you can point me in the right direction.

Dru,
Anything you bought from RCS or DTG will automatically get reloaded. If you go into your assets folder you can copy and paste it into your documents folder and all your stuff will be saved there. If you have routes from others you will have to go into the contents folder and get them out one at a time or again copy the whole contents folder to your my documents. Then you can delete your whole Railworks folder as long as you remember your login and password for Steam. The next time you sign on to Steam it will reload your whole railworks folder with a new clean install. If that works then you can start placing any custom assets you might have back into your system. If that doesn't all make sense PM me.

OK, Friends,

I re-loaded TS. All of my routes were there. Started the game and a route, and crashed after 5 minutes. Now, I am beginning to think I may have a problem with my video card. Will investigate further, but I think for normal use, the video card is handling the day to day ops. of my computer. But on average it is taking 3-5 minutes before the crash. Maybe some spring cleaning is in order.

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions and comments.

Will let you all know what happens from here.

FIXED - FIXED - FIXED ! ! !

I pulled the video card this afternoon and discovered there were TWO cooling fans underneath that were not visible or accessible UNLESS you pulled the card. I have cleaned this computer many times, never realizing there were two fans on the bottom of the card! One fan had a cardboard cable tag caught in it, stopping it completely and both were caked with dust, cat fur and dog fur. After a good cleaning, I put everything back together, cranked up and ran three scenearios, back to back, a total of nearly two hours of run time, at the highest graphic settings! No glitches, no crashes, no errors! ! ! Thanks to all of you who offered comments and suggestions! I'm back at the throttle again! !*YAAA*!
