The extra browser window when downloading

Unread postby artimrj » Tue Dec 03, 2013 1:31 pm

Is everyone or anyone else getting the extra browser window you have to close when downloading a file from here? I just updated the download software and this started happening to me. I click the download button, accept the disclaimer and a new browser opens up. When I close it the file is waiting to be downloaded.

I just tested it here and yes, I get the new window too.

*Update* When the new widow opens on my browser (IE10), it immediately closes and the download bar appears at the bottom of the original window.

He fixed other bugs and made new ones. Oh well, guess I will have to explore the php code a bit and see whats up. Why he is calling a new window I have no idea. I thought it might be my browser.

I am using Firefox and it just flashed the "extra" screen and then it went away and returned to the one I started from.

With IE I get the extra window; close it and the download is waiting. With Google Chrome it worked normally; there might have been a flash of a window but if so it was too quick to be sure.

Lately, I am encountering many instances of IE not handling site scripting correctly. It seems any kind of automation gives trouble which has steadily gotten more frequent over the past year. As much as it annoys me I am learning to use two browsers depending on the site and what I'm trying to do on it. As a matter-of-fact, I have been using Chrome to download from RWA and most sites for a couple of months now because in IE after clicking "Download", it would take up to 15 minutes for the confirmation to popup.

With Fire Fox, I get a pop up window "Please accept license agreement before downloading" and after I choose accept, the file downloads. No other windows appear.

I got something called 'Snap'. I had gotten that a week or so ago when I d/l'd G-Chrome... but it was easy enough to delete. However, it just turned up again today or yesterday. Saw it one time, but haven't seen it since. So far he said!

Just tested, only happens in IE. Both Chrome and Firefox open the new window to initiate the download, but also close them immediate again. Only IE waits for user input (closing the window) before continuing.
Not tested with Opera or Safari.

This just started after I updated the software. So it is either Sl Downloads or Joomla itself doing it eh? Or is there some kind of setting in IE to turn it off?

Using Firefox 25.0.1, no extra window here, or maybe it closes too fast for me to notice it.

Not likely, otherwise we all set the same setting to the same value at the same time. Most likely SL_Download causing this or maybe your new webserver settings are different. Did you try a download on the new server before you upgraded SL_Downloads? I'll install the updated version in my off-line copy of the site and see what happens.

Edit:

It is sl_downloads v3 that caused this. It did not happen on the old version and once I updated to v3 it gave me the extra page. Only difference between my local copy of RWA and the on-line version is that in IE the page gets closed automatically on m,y local copy once I decide what to do with the file (open/save), instead of having to close it manually on the on-line version.
