Union Pacific Schenectady 4-4-0 reskins, version 1, by Daniel Gollery (Trainboi1 on RWA)
A texture upgrade for Smokebox's "Omaha" DLC on Steam.
In brief: This is a set of texture upgrades for Smokebox's fantistic Omaha and Idaho locomotives. Additionally, it features 22 quickdrives based on prototypical UP consists, including one photographed behind the Idaho around 1867.
QD Requirements: Additionally to the "Omaha" model from Steam required for the skins, the separately included Quickdrives pack requires both 1860s rolling stock packs, UP 119, and my UPRR passenger car reskins (which also require Jupiter) in order to work properly.
Real history: You could consider the Omaha and Idaho to be the first modern locomotives on the Union Pacific. Built in May 1866, they are virtually indistinguishable from the standard design that would launch Schenectady into stardom in the late 1860s and 1870s and make them second only to Baldwin. They were built following the pattern of UP's two Norris engines, the Major General Sheridan and the Vice Admiral Farragut, following the success of those two engines. They proved a crew favorite, and the Omaha was requisitioned to become the switcher for the new shops at Omaha, while Idaho worked the road's heaviest passenger trains. Both continued in their respective roles; Omaha must have returned to regular service at some point because it was back on mainline service when it and Idaho were renumbered to 574 and 575 in 1885. 574 was still in prime condition in 1894, two years before its retirement; I have not found a photograph of 575 late in life, but it lasted even longer, being sold to Hicks Locomotive and Car Company in 1902. Its fate beyond there is not known to me.
Historical disclaimer: In addition to the margin for error associated with replicating engines that were gone by the early 20th century, there is one known, notable historical errors present. The tender frame accents form five panels on the sides and two on the ends, and feature red in-fill bounded by black. According to the latest research, there should be three panels on the side, two on the back, and two on the front, and they should constitute a double golden stripe. This cannot be remedied properly because of the way the side frame is textured, so I have elected to leave well enough alone rather than pester Smokebox any further.
Installation: Unpack Assets\Smokebox\Omaha\OmahaAssets.ap before installing.
Unpack UP_Schenectady_Reskins.rwp using Railworks Utilities.
Then, copy the .GeoPcDx files from the Assets\Smokebox\Omaha\RailVehicles\Steam\Engine folder to the adjacent Engine 2 folder.
If you also want to replace the textures on the original engines, install UP_Schenectady_Reskin_Replacers.rwp using Utilities.
Finally, unpack the Consists RWP file using Railworks Utilities, making sure you have my UPRR passenger car skins installed before doing so.
Credits: Smokebox's help and support cannot be overstated. In addition to making these engines at my suggestion, helping with my other skins, and consulting with me to make sure these were as good as I knew to get them back in 2018, he provided UV layouts for them so that during this revision, I could make everything as accurate as possible.
Jim Wilke, Jon Davis, Kyle Wyatt, Andrew Brandon, Randy Hees, John Ott, and many others have worked together for years to publicize the information used in creating these skins. Their importance cannot be overstated in trying to do historically accurate Western representations of any kind. In particular, this skin uses photo-textured scrollwork on the headlight based on a replica Williams light photographed by Andrew Brandon, headlight side artwork based on John Ott's lovely drawing of Jupiter, and name textures generated from a set of vectors made by Andrew Brandon.
