Description

Central Pacific 4-4-0 reskins, version 2, by Daniel Gollery (Trainboi1 on RWA)
An update of and expansion on "CP/UP 4-4-0 Reskins" on the RWA file library.

In brief: This is a set of 20 reskins on Smokebox's Jupiter pack to represent all of the CP's "Standards" ordered before 1870. It also includes a set of 49 quickdrive consists based on prototypical Central Pacific consists.

QD Requirements: Additionally to the "Jupiter" model from Steam required for the skins, the separately included Quickdrives pack requires UP 119, both 1860s rolling stock packs, and my CPRR passenger car and flatcar reskins in order to work properly.

Real history: After McKay & Aldus went bankrupt in 1867, the Central Pacific was scrambling to find a replacement for their 30-odd outstanding orders with that company. Officially, the company was supposed to test a variety of different builders before selecting one to take on this sizable contract. However, the road became so desperate that by the time No. 84 "Gazelle" arrived in April 1868, it was immediately and summarily approved as the blueprint for the remaining required engines on the road. As a result, the railroad acquired a further 19 passenger 4-4-0s, 10 freight 4-4-0s and 4 4-6-0s from Schenectady before 1870. Their haste proved worthwhile - in 1869, no fewer than three Schenectady 4-4-0s hauled Stanford's special train to Promontory Summit for the joining of the rails, and in 1876, No. 149 "Black Fox", specially fitted with a 6-axle tender from the Sacramento Shops, set a land speed record while completing the Lightning Express cross-country run, navigating the 875-mile CP system in just 24 hours, arriving at its destination at the San Francisco ferry pier 12 hours ahead of schedule.

Historical disclaimer: In addition to the margin for error associated with replicating engines that were gone by the early 20th century, there are two known, notable historical errors present. First, the tender frame accents form five panels on the sides and two on the ends, and feature red in-fill bounded by black. According to the latest research, there should be three panels on the side, two on the back, and two on the front, and they should constitute a double golden stripe. The second issue is unique to Jupiter, because its headlight suffered damage in late 1868 and had to be repainted by the Sacramento shops. As a result, in May 1869, Jupiter had a prussian blue headlight with handpainted gold lining and scarlet highlighting, similarly to what is seen on the original model. No other locomotives on CP are known to have this headlight livery, so I used the Williams factory livery. It is accurate to Jupiter, just not to how it appeared at the Golden Spike ceremony.

Installation: For best results, unpack the Assets\Smokebox\Jupiter contents AP file before installing. Then, unpack the Reskins RWP file using Railworks Utilities. Finally, copy the .GeoPcDx files from the Assets\Smokebox\Jupiter\RailVehicles\Steam\Jupiter\Default\Engine folder to the respective Engine Reskins, Engine 2, Engine 3, Engine 4, and Engine 5 folders. Finally, unpack the Consists RWP file using Railworks Utilities.

Credits: Smokebox was a great help in reskinning these. He provided UV layouts, some of the original source files, beta tested the original pack, and encouraged me every step of the way, not to mention making the original pack. Even after the completion of the original model, these skins would not have been possible to this extent without his help and feedback.
Jim Wilke, Jon Davis, Kyle Wyatt, Andrew Brandon, Randy Hees, John Ott, and many others have worked together for years to publicize the information used in creating these skins. Their importance cannot be overstated in trying to do historically accurate Western representations of any kind. Additionally to that, the name textures in these skins were made by Andrew Brandon as part of a decal set, and are used with his blessing.
