I remember the Lima built AC-9's burned coal, but they were built for the Sunset Route from Texas across to Los Angeles. Not many tunnels there. The AC-9s were 2-8-8-4s and boy were they one beautiful locomotive.

Surprisingly enough, the Germans built at least one cabforward which burned (pulverised) coal.

I'll bet that monster was hated by the service crews.

bwfer wrote:Couple of points... The tender water tank was not pressurized... didn't have to be... both The Nathan non-lifting injector and the Worthington cold water pump (for the feedwater heater) were located below the tank bottom. The injector was located near the lower portion of the cab ladder on the fireman's side. The cold water pump was located on the engineers side at the lower rear of the locomotive just behind the steam chest.

The distinctive sound you are referring to is the sound of the smoke box mounted cross-compound air compressors exhausting through a short length of pipe directly into the atmosphere. That along with the whine of the turbo generator and the deep roar of the firebox was a sound not to be forgotten. No other locomotive sounded like that. and I, too, hope that these sound are incorporated into the model.

I too witnessed these locos in person (as a child). in addition to riding in the cabs on numerous occasions.

Edit: The tender oil tank was pressurized at about 5 lbs per square inch with air from the main air reservoir.

Brian,

Thank you for the clarification! You obviously had a closer relationship with this loco then I did...

That said, perhaps you and I are two of the oldest posters here! I'm 83, and it was me, on Navy Christmas leave in 1947, witnessing the cabforward assisting that steamliner I mentiond. *!!thnx!!*

You've got me beat by about 9 years! I'm 74... Posted this in the video section, so the 'youngsters' can see this locomotive in action... some really super footage.

I saw this before, and noted the sound of those steam powered air pumps just behind the stack! A great video indeed! !!*ok*!!

My prayers have been answered. 40ft PFE Ice Reefers in two different types with at least three different schemes will be included with the Cab Forwards.

Are those winter textures on the pilot?

And steam era PFE reefers as well?

How does a steam locomotive look in snow? Seems difficult to model snow between the wheel spokes and on any surface that isn't hot?
Was Donner Pass mostly thick snow covers or also deep frost?

Great to see some of the slightly older PFE cars behind the AC, and the newer cars will be nice pulled by a set of Fs in the late 1950s. *!greengrin!*

You do know that there are great reefers out there already, both from Brit Kits and from Golden Age?
!*cheers*!
