Southern Pacific: Cab Forward

Cab Forwards, Big Boys and Challengers are nice, and they are right at home on Donner Pass and Sherman Hill, but without the proper (1930's to 1050's) frieight and passenger rolling stock they are just so much eye candy. Oh, I will definitly buy the Cab Forward when it's released, and I alredy own the other two but a string of 40 foot PFE reefers and a bunch of 40 and 50 foot boxcars with vintage lettering sure would be nice, and both the Challenger and the Cab Forwards did duty hauling passengers.

I thank you all for your suggestions. I am well aware of and have most of the products you mentioned. BUT there is not a single Union Pacific, Southern Pacific or PFE 40' or 50' boxcar or Reefer anywhere. I do not have the talent to repaint so don't even think about suggesting that, and Michael has already said he has no interest in doing any UP equipment. I'm hoping someone with talent will take up the cause!!!

A steam locomotive I have been yerning for years!

In my youth, I witnessed this loco in action over Donnar Pass (assisting the streamliner "City of San Francisco" over the pass from Reno in 1947.)

The most compelling memory I have of this loco is the distinct sound that came from steam injectors not seen/heard on any other locomotive, so far as I know.

I am guessing here, but I know that the tender oil and water containers had to be pressurized to prevent the locomotive from being "starved" of water and fuel oil on steep grades, which does not run up-hill from the tender to the fire box on such grades! Therefore, I think perhaps that these special steam pumps had to provide that pressure.

You could hear these locos for miles for the distinctive high pitch "chew chew" sound they would make.

I would wish the developers of this loco would look into providing this most distinctive sound.....

Couple of points... The tender water tank was not pressurized... didn't have to be... both The Nathan non-lifting injector and the Worthington cold water pump (for the feedwater heater) were located below the tank bottom. The injector was located near the lower portion of the cab ladder on the fireman's side. The cold water pump was located on the engineers side at the lower rear of the locomotive just behind the steam chest.

The distinctive sound you are referring to is the sound of the smoke box mounted cross-compound air compressors exhausting through a short length of pipe directly into the atmosphere. That along with the whine of the turbo generator and the deep roar of the firebox was a sound not to be forgotten. No other locomotive sounded like that. and I, too, hope that these sound are incorporated into the model.

I too witnessed these locos in person (as a child). in addition to riding in the cabs on numerous occasions.

Edit: The tender oil tank was pressurized at about 5 lbs per square inch with air from the main air reservoir.

My sentiments exactly. While some when playing with their HO layouts are content to have a French TGV run alongside an American 4-4-0 and the Flying Scotsman, because they are all trains, others like to recreate a little more realism. While I am longing for the Cab Forwards (I loved the 3DTrainstuff's historic Donner Pass MSTS Route), it is difficult to get excited running Cab Forwards up Donner Pass with no service facilities / age appropriate rolling stock or route assets and the same applies to Sherman Hill. Big Boys / 3900's etc and no where for them to realistically run and little to haul. Personally I think RSC do themselves a disservice in just releasing motive power / rolling stock without an appropriate route. I am surprised nothing more has been released for HSC - they have a ready created market with where to run, they just need to supply something to run.

Typical newbee Q: Are there any coal fired cab fw locomotives ? Do those have a second cab for the stoker ?
