Thanks for that. A screen shot would be great. My custom fields tab shows nothing in it. I am not sure how to add the railsim features to this list. This box just says no custom material fields difined.

Can you tell that this is the first time that I am trying this?

Thanks again for the help guys, learning as I go here.

So JP there is another tutorial you want to look at that JP made. Its available to download here at RWA: Search Tag: jpetersjr-Sketchup_to_3DCrafter_Tutorial

Since you are not using SU you can skip over most of that part. I also recommend UKTS and the 3DC forums.

I will check it out, thanks. I did find how to add the RailSim to the materials list now I just need to figure out how to apply this TrainGlass filter to only one of the textures in the model.

Select the component you want to apply the filter to, then open the Material Properties tab (I believe this is what it is called), you will see a small table show up where the texture is shown, scroll to the right and you will see the Rail Sim field. You can add it there, and it will be applied to just that component.

Does that work for single textures or does the model need to be in multiple parts? I wonder if I could create a layer that is the one color or texture and apply the filter to that layer or color only.

Hmmmm, the more I look at this the more I don't think it will do what I am after. I have made a platform hut in Sketchup and then impoted it into 3DC. Now I do the texturing in 3DC so that is not the problem. The SketchUp model is all one part when transfered to 3DC and it looks like this .fx can only be applied to an entire part so I guess the model needs to be built in 3DC and made up of several parts. The aluminum frame would be one part and all the semi clear glass would be another part.

So with my model, I made the glass texture its own file. If you are making swatches in a single texture file, I guess you can make one of the them glass. It seems more complicated to me to do it this way especially if you start running into issues with the texture getting compressed (glass should not use a compressed texture), and then there is trying to control the alpha within the swatch.

The more I think about it, it is doable, but for repainters it could be a gotcha situation if they accidentally mess with it

Ah yes, so when you import from SU the whole thing comes over as one component. I think there is a way around this, but I dropped using SU a couple months back and boldly defied the learning curve of 3DC. I have not regretted it. I can produce models just as fast now in 3DC as I did in SU, with less poly count, no need to import/export, guess where my faces went... etc...

I have done a few simple things in 3DC from scratch but SU is so much easier to use. I wonder if the TrainGlass.fx can be applied by texture. If it could be done this way then the texture that I am using as glass could have the shader applied while the other remain unchanged. Well I will keep playing with it and see what I can come up with. Thanks again for the tips you got me going in the proper direction and that is a big help.
