RailworksAmerica.com down?

Unread postby micaelcorleone » Mon Dec 19, 2011 9:26 am

Has RailworksAmerica.com been down in the last hours?

Since about 4 hours I couldn't access the forums or the website. I also tried it on my IPhone. Nothing.
Firefox loaded and loaded the site, but nothing came and then, after some time, it stopped to load the site and there only was a blank screen.
Now it works again.

Anyone experienced the same problems?

I've been gone for about 5 hours and it was working when I left and it's obviously working now. *!greengrin!*

Someone I was chatting to earlier was having DNS issues with the entire domain last night ( and some issues with the website earlier ) - personally I've not had any problem at all. These things happen, depends on who's providing transit to local ISPs and so on.

If anyone were to do a trace route from their computer to any web site, you'd see that you generally go through 12 to 30 servers before you get to where you're going. Problems could arise at any point in between and that would make the connection drop or extremely slow.

Same incident just happend again.

"server not found" from 18:20 to 18:26 CET.
I logged into RWA and wanted to reply to a topic and suddenly the site didn't load anymore.

It has been the same on my phone with mobile internet, not connected to my wlan.

If you're technical-minded enough to know how to swap DNS servers, you could try an alternative service if that keeps up - Google runs one, there are others around. I think one of the transit providers to Europe is throwing minor wobblies atm, but I don't work in networks anymore so no way to find out for sure.

Yep! This time I caught it and reported it to the server tech, also mentioning this morning's outage.

Edit 1: Just found out it was down for a couple of minutes when they had to reboot the server to correct the 7z file problem mentioned in this thread.

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4315

Of course that doesn't explain this morning, but the server tech said he doesn't show any record of the site being down this morning. !*don-know!*

One thing that would be a big help for me is if the site goes down again for anyone, would be to do a trace route and post the results.

Here's how:

Open a command prompt and type this in at the blinking cursor. tracert railworksamerica.com (note the space between tracert and railworksamerica)
It will check up to 30 hops (this will also show you how many servers your connection goes through to get from your computer to RWA *!!wink!!* ).
Once the trace route is complete, go to the little black button in the top left, click on it and from the drop down menu select Edit/Select all. The go back to the drop down box and select Edit/Copy.
Then just paste that into Notepad and save it. When the site is back up, copy the text from Notepad and paste it into a post.

Edit 1: Here's a link on how to do a trace route.

Hawk, it's been fine for me all day - I wouldn't blame the server for earlier outages. Likewise DNS has been fine, but I run my own DNS server anyway.

I wouldn't think much of it if it weren't for the fact that the site was down this morning from California and Germany.
