A question about Fraps and You Tube

Unread postby krellnut » Sat Dec 03, 2011 6:02 pm

Hi all, I'm going to buy Fraps and want to make a video for my upcoming SD70 sound pack, and then upload it to You Tube. I've never done this before so if anybody could explain it to me like I'm a three year old, that would be great. Thank you. !*salute*!

How I do it:

* Run fraps, set your capture settings up ( all 2-3 of them )
* Run RW windowed
* Hit F12 to start capturing
* Do stuff!
* Hit F12 again to stop, exit.

The only editing program I have is Premiere which is a real pain for most of what I load to youtube, so

* Start VirtualDub ( google for it )
* Dump useless bits of video
* Add null filter and use it to crop if necessary
* Save as DivX 720p ( usually needs two encoding passes to do that ) with mp3 encoded audio

* Upload to youtube.

The freebie Windows Movie Maker is apparently enough to get started if you want to actually edit properly - virtualdub is meant for capturing from TV cards and then re-encoding with a bazillion options, it's not really an editor.

My settings:

Run Railworks at 1280x720 in windowed.

Fraps Settings:

FPS: 29.97
Lock Framerate.
Record Sound.

Sony Vegas render as uncompressed AVI. Compress through 'Easy H264'. Upload to the 'tube.

Thanks for the response. Does windowed mean monitor 2 times 1. It does sound complicated to make and get a video on You Tube.

Windowed simply means not running the game fullscreen so not to stretch everything when using 1280x720. I don't have duel or triple monitors so I run 1x1.

BNSF650: It depends on the route and how much 'stuff' is on screen.

BTW: The F12 key is, by default, used by the Steam-Client to take in-game screen-shots. So, to avoid conflicts with FRAPS, which also uses the F12 key by default, you might want to either change the setting for that key either in your Steam-Client or FRAPS.

Though FRAPS is pretty good, another good capture utility that I like is Dxtory: http://dxtory.com/v2-home-en.html , which personally I prefer over FRAPS, but it's all a matter of what seems to work well for you and what you like best.

Though both of their free-versions will have limitations, such as having their website-address watermark logo on your videos, or perhaps also being limited in how long of a video-capture you can make.

I made my recent "King's Arm Highway Deluxe" video using the Dxtory utility, and then used Windows Live Movie maker (which came installed with my Windows 7) to edit it and convert it over to WMV format, then I uploaded it to YouTube.
Here's the link to the more HQ version of my video if wanting to see it as an example:

@ Lone Wolf- would like to but that program you use, but how much is 3600JPY. Awesome video and your route looks awesome too.
I use a 1920 by 1080p projector, but I still should set the res. to 1280 by 720. Also, if I get the video made and upload to You Tube, do you automatically get the link to post here.
@ Chessie- so simply changing my resolution from native to your settings will make run in windowed mode.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Just have to uncheck the "Fullscreen" box under the screen resolution in the Railworks settings tab.

That's "Japanese Yen". Apparently, the fellow that made the Dxtory utility is based in Japan (and looking at his forums, it seems to be half Japanese and half English).
You can use an online Currency Converter to give you a good idea of how much it translates over into your currency that you use.

A site that is good for this that I sometimes use is: http://www.xe.com/ucc/

So, 3600 JPY equals around $46 USD. A bit more expensive than FRAPS, but personally I like Dxtory better, and seems to do a better job for me and it's options and features.
But, it's all a personal choice. If you look around, there's other similar utilities out there too. I looked at and tried several of them (the Trial versions), but in the end decided to go with Dxtory.

Also, once you upload a video to your YouTube account, there should be "Links" that you can find for your video that you can post.
If on a YouTube page watching a video, underneath the video is a "Share" button, click on that and it gives you a link you can copy & paste.

I just run 1600x900 ( actually that's my usual res even for playing ) and resize when I'm re-encoding. That will help get round the lack of AA in windowed mode somewhat.
