Because if you buy things from Dick Cowen, the money goes to Dick Cowen. You buy from RSC, guess who gets the money.

Because it's not their concern what is already modeled by someone else. It's their concern what is modeled by them and what is in their catalog. A small percentage of Railworks users even know about the various small 3rd party developers. Some who know about them prefer not to buy from them because it's a pain keeping track of updates when you have a list of 6 different developers you have bought stuff from. Hell, I can even attest to this. I'm lost in all the updates that come out between IHH, Britkits, Just Trains, Creative Rail, Mesh Tools, Golden Age etc.. It's a lot to keep track of. I don't mind it, others do. Steam is your one stop shop for updates and patches and the more RSC have in their catalog the more attractive they are to potential customers.

Just boil it down to "because they wanted to". There's no other reason that matters anyway.

I would rather keep track with the third-party guys. The small-potatos developers have a lot more at stake, so when something goes awry (i.e. The Great Downdate breaks your locomotives) they jump on things and get them fixed so the revenue keeps flowing. No fan grills still follwing locomotives by Gtrax or 3DTrains that I know of.

I think it's a dumb move on RSC's part (at this point) to duplicate locomotives we already have. There are plenty of other issues ( and thousands of other locos that have not been done ) that could have time and resources devoted to them. The biggest problem with this in my opinion is that it's going to hurt the diversity of the sim in the long run. Why, as a third party developer, would you take the time to make a locomotive or piece of rolling stock if RSC is just going to duplicate it later and take away your business? Don't whine about it five years from now when Streamlines and such still wont get involved because of anti-competitive crap like that.

You do yours because you want to? is anyone treating this as a primary business other than RSC?

The GG1 is a classic. We have got at least three different modellers with Fs out there and three with GP7/9s All classic types. The more the merrier.
For the record, though in the same country, I have no connection with RSC, my work is not up to their standard. I model for fun and am very grateful for the people who graciously purchase my stuff after sampling my freeware models.
I am in the (slow) process of upgrading everything because yes the early models were only a step up from my original MSTS ones, TSM source files converted to 3DC. The cab sounds??? Funnily most of my cab sounds are aliased to default ones!!!!!!
As I have said elsewhere. It is rather like the way the railways developed in the US. First the rush to get something down. Light rails, wooden structures light equipment. Then a period of consolidation and upgrading. That is where I am now.
Hornby and Triang is the comparison but you need to go back to the British 00 model railways of the 60s to see it!!!! !*YAAA*!

One bought the other out there, Dick, I'm not sure you really want to be making those comparisons :)

Mr. Cowen. You should not put yourself down in front of RSC, your work is really great, and they should learn customer support at least, from you. If they were on top of fixing things as you have been, all we would do is drive trains and not complain. Please, don't ever stop modeling. I don't have all your coaches or locomotives yet, but I will. And I'll buy them from you, not RSC. !!*ok*!! !*salute*!

There are how many different payware/freeware SD40-2, Dash 9, SD70Ace models in MSTS? I don't recall people saying that SLI shouldn't produce x,y,z because Gaetan, or MLT, DW or Bob Wirth had created versions beforehand.

What would the reaction be if someone other than RSC had come along and said they were building a payware GG1?

So as not to risk thread-lock, this is my last opine for this one...

Not quite the same Dan. Number one, MSTS didn't produce anything other than the locomotives that came with the sim, and we all know the story behind that. Two, though there were replications, those came at a time when there were already hundreds, if not thousands of locomotives to choose from in the sim. How many locomotives do we have in Railworks? SD60-70 Spartans? 45's, 9-35's? Dash 7, 8? Goshawful loads of Steam? Why go after someone else's bread when there are so many other loaves out there for the picking? If RSC wanted to come back later and waste time doing whats already been done better, after we have sufficient diversity of rolling stock to be able to simulate realistic operations, then by all means do so. And last, my favorite, and least - other problems with sim ( the aforementioned fans, and much harped on physics ) that should be worked out before more DLC, especially duplicates, are released.

I don't think I need to go any further back than the last 2 years for any comparisons :D

There can be only one
