Water Coolers & Forest Fire Smoke

Unread postby GogebicChief » Fri Sep 11, 2026 5:03 am

This is kind of a FYI: I learned a couple of new things this week. AIO Water Coolers do evaporate coolant, and Computer internals do not like Forest Fire Smoke. Back in late July and early August, here in PDX we had 7+ days of unhealthy air quality due to big Forest Fire in the MT Hood National Forest. I went to fire up the Desktop Sunday, and it sounded like a Rock Crusher, and every alarm on my motherboard went off. I think though it did not damage the Processor. I have spent most of the week blowing and hand cleaning every inch of the case. The AIO Cooler radiator was completely plugged, the whole system did not have a drop of coolant. Believe it or not, the AIO Cooler fan would not turn and 2 of the fan blades were broken & bent... !*hp*! I am also going to have to change the 4 chassis fans too, as you can feel grinding when you spin them by hand. I will say that NAVIDIA has their act together when it come to cooling systems, as I check-out my RTX Card, and it is AOK. By Sunday or Monday I will hopefully have it back up and running. I am also putting removable filters on the intake fans, to help avoid this kind of mess.

I am telling this because I know we have many members in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Central Canadian Provinces, that had many days of Forest Fire Smoke. It might be a good idea to take a couple of minutes and blow out and check Your CPU's, even if Your units are not water cooled. that Forest Fire Smoke, is just like volcanic ash,(I Know I was here in PDX when Mt St Helens Blew) and wreaks havoc on electronics. I hope this Helps, & Take Care Stefan !*salute*!
