NdeM40ftBoxcarsConasupo.jpg
Thank you for downloading and installing this set of two 40' NdeM boxcars replicating the Conasupo store boxcars. Between the 1960's and 1990's, the Mexican government ran a food program called Conasupo (Compañía Nacional de Subsistencias Populares). The intent was to distribute basic food staples (tortillas, corn, oil, milk) to the rural and urban poor populations. Food prices were guaranteed through government regulation and subsidizes.
Food was distributed through mercardos (markets) / tiendas (stores) using a distribution network that included rail. The ferro (iron) tiendas were spotted on spurs that were easily accessible to the public. The boxcar stores carried the various food staples along with a small storeroom and a place for the store keeper to sleep.
Eventually though, Conasupo met it's demise in the late 1990's due to financial deficits and corruption. Of note, Conasupo got caught up in a scandal involving the import and distribution of radioactive milk powder back in the 1980's.
As for these repaints, there is only one fixed number for each car. I couldn't use auto-numbering due to the placement of various logos. If you are modeling the NdeM, and as mentioned above, the boxcars would have been spotted on a spur. To date, I have yet to find any of these cars in a train consist.
