Starting 64 Bit Simulator

Unread postby railduffer » Sat Nov 21, 2020 10:34 am

The 32 Bit version of Train Simulator will start using the desktop icon without going through Steam. In the 64 Bit version I must first start Steam to get For the simulation to start. I saw a solution for this problem a few weeks ago on the forum, but now I can't find it. Could someone help me please?

Go into your default Railworks folder and place a shortcut icon for the file: RailWork64.exe on your desktop. Then all you have to do is doubleclick on the shortcut icon and the 64 bit version will run vice the 32 bit version.

I have a shortcut like that too. But I first have to start-up Steam.

I know this has been posted multiple times not only here but on the DTG forums. You can't run Train Simulator 20xx without logging into Steam. You can, however, run the 64 bit version from a shortcut without going into your Steam library to start the game.

There should be a way to set up a .bat file to start both at the same time from the desktop, although it is no big deal to hit each if you have shortcuts to both on your desktop. Those who are knowledgeable might chime in. You could do it by voice command using Siri, Cortana, or Google. Two clicks is simple enough for me.
I did find this: https://perishablepress.com/launch-mult ... one-click/

On the Steam page you can do a setting so Steam starts every time you start your computer than you don't have to worry about doing it.

This problem is a limitation of the Steam url protocol.
If you look at your shortcut for TS2020, as created when installing the game, its URL is "steam://rungameid/24010".
Your computer knows it should start the Steam service and then pass the game ID to it, so that Steam launches TS2020 32 bits.
The Steam protocol allows for only one target for a game ID, so we can't make another Steam URL for launching the 64-bits version.
Also we cannot (as far as I know) change the default URL.

So the best solution is the one suggested by Buzz.

How about renaming the EXE , but that might possibly cause a ton of other unexpected effects.

I created 2 .bat file in the Railworks folder.
1. Rename.bat
rename Railworks.exe Railworks.exe_32
rename Railworks64.exe Railworks.exe
rename Railworks.exe_32 Railworks64.exe
After running the .bat file, when you click the desktop icon, the 64-bit version runs
2. Rename Undo.bat
rename Railworks64.exe Railworks.exe_32
rename Railworks.exe Railworks64.exe
rename Railworks.exe_32 Railworks.exe
This .bat file returns the names to default.

I did follow your instructions into bat file but came up with txt file not bat. I am not sure what else to code the commands that you have for your bat file.

Thank you

It's a simple text file, but you need to rename the .txt extension to .bat

Yes I did save on file/save as on both bat files. But still ask me to login to Steam first.

My question is that which exe of Railworks should I create to desktop? 32 or 64-bit version.

The one you want to run. Preferably the 64 bit version if that one you usually use.
