Pittsburgh's Twisted Routes

My September issue of Trains magazine came today. It has a great Map of the Month two-page spread of Pittsburgh's Railroads in 1946 on pp. 56-57. The map gave me alot of insight to the jumble of rails through Pittsburgh on the P&LE Route. There is also a neat article on railfanning the CSX through Hamlet, NC. Well worth the investment...

If you really want to read some of the best books about railroading in the Pittsburgh area, look for "Sandpatch, Clash of the Titans", "Triumph I - Altoona to Pitcairn", and/or "Triumph VIII - Pittsburgh, Eye of two storms." Charles S. Roberts wrote all of them. They are a bit pricey, but have tons of good information.

My favorite RR author. I've had Roberts' West End for years, and just picked up East End (Hollis/Roberts) for $25 on eBay - less than half retail. The books might get harder to find as time goes, since Roberts passed away last year and he was one of the owners of the company that published the books (Bernard, Roberts and CO).
Cheers!
