UPRR SD70ACe Employee Pride repaint vote

Unread postby GERUNIMO625 » Sat Mar 16, 2019 3:12 pm

Howdy Folks,

I know some of you guys like this stuff. The UP is asking its employees to vote on a new engine paint job to honor its work force. Thought some of you would like to see the choices...
UPSD70vote.jpg

Personally I wish they'd just take the money and pay our claims and honor our agreements...But I'm a nobody *!rolleyes!*

Take care!

This is a serious question not meant to be negative but doesn't every single person working for every single railroad have a negative attitude about every company?

The first one definitely has Socialist imagery. The only thing missing is this.

It's not a RR thing, it's the first generation where everybody gets a trophy thing.

Socialist? pffffft. There's nothing uniquely socialist about pictures of working people. You see the same kind of imagery put out by every political movement, because they all at least pretend to be pro-worker. The Soviets did tend to make a lot of use of it, but they hardly have a monopoly on it.

It's a PR stunt more than an actual employee pride thing. Every company likes to portray that persona of hard working middle class heroes covered in dirt and draped in american pride.

Granted they actually are heroes but nobody tells you just how much life can suck doing some of these jobs. It's just as much of a mental battle as it is a physical one.

Hey from a GOG who's shoveled more than his share of poop in work I have a word of advice. If you don't like your job go find something else to do. Life is too short to waste it being miserable every day. Every job has a certain amount of not fun associated with but everyone needs some satisfaction to make it worthwhile.

No, it is I who is being negative. *!embar*!
I suppose in all honesty most folks moan about their jobs in some capacity or another. Whether your boss is a moron or the soda/pop machine in the break room is always empty, the list goes on.
The railroad of course as most of you know, has been a union organization for a very very long time and this can often create a rift between the work force and management.
I think what most folks find frustrating about the railroad (atleast on my end) is how we are treated. It is often the case that a certain train is behind schedule and a manager will ask you for a "special move" which often means cutting corners and breaking rules so as to get the train moving/out. Now if something happens, who do you think would take the blame for it? So some folks break the rules and get the train moving, others stick to their guns and follow the rules. The guy who stuck to his guns might end up finding something wrong with the train (maybe the reason it was delayed in the first place); finding the fault might result in its immediate repair, delaying the train further. This ofcourse infuriates the manager who told you to move your butt in the first place. Which can lead to him trying to bird dog you later and catch you slipping up. My company preaches safety and following the rules (as most do). So the dilemma is what do you do? Follow the rules and get in trouble, or don't follow the rules and get in trouble?! Now the easy answer is, always follow every rule and you won't get in trouble. Easier said then done. There are sooo many and they can change often and don't always pertain to every situation and minus the GCOR most railroad rules are written with a certain grey area to allow room for interpretation for or against a certain situation. Throw in a less then healthy life style, plus little sleep, and your gonna break rules. How many of you know all your rules of the road and follow them every time you drive? I know I can't/don't. *!embar*!

As for the Union, they are in bed with the company and regularly don't or fail to defend us properly. Unlike most industries that have seen wage increases over the years our industry has seen a decrease (I'm told this is the same with trucking). A guy I work with who is 67 and about to retire after 41 years, makes about $10-15,000 less then he did in the 80s!
So thats a taste of it, there is actually waaaay more to it and I could go further down the rabbit hole, but I'm trying to restrain myself. *!greengrin!*
Also worth mentioning, despite, all the moaning and complaining, you don't see many of us leaving looking for other jobs. *!rolleyes!*

Admittedly, it was ALOT to take in after coming from the Army after 10 years. In that environment nothing came before mission success, not food, not god, not your life! If things weren't the way they were supposed to be, you "sucked it up" and drove on. Talk about counter culture!

Also, (from my experience) employees that had previously worked for, or current employees that work in a territory that was formerly a different railroad tend to have a bad taste in their mouths towards the purchasing company. I work a region that was formerly CNW and you see that attitude daily. I hear that folks that worked for MOPAC, SP, WP are the same, but I can't confirm that.

Anyway, take care!

P.S. You know why I love the internet? I post a picture figuring you guys would have a conversation about which paint job was best, instead you had a conversation about socialism! No sarcasm, I'm dead serious, YOUR ALL AWESOME AND I'M GLAD YOUR ALL HERE, THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS!!! *!greengrin!* !!*ok*!! !*salute*!

I like the second one.
I don't see what's wrong with going out of their way to appreciate they employees. I mean they work hard and in the late night/early morning... I think it's nice of UP to do this.
Hopefully it will actually go into revenue service unlike 1943, which has just been on OCS trains, etc.
Can't wait to see the cab scribbles inside it... !*roll-laugh*! !*roll-laugh*! !*roll-laugh*!

I'm going to go with paint job #2. The first paint job definitely looks a lot like early 1970s-era socialist workers party propaganda artwork for sure and I hate it. The third paint job looks like a generic American presidential campaign tour bus turned into a diesel locomotive.

As for the discussions of workers, companies and unions? If you don't like your job or how the company is treating you, then leave. Every job I didn't like, I quit if it was bad enough. I hate unions and would never work for a company that forced me to join or pay dues towards one. I'm an at-will employment kind of guy. Unions are just legalized mobsters. They find companies they contributed nothing financially towards... either in initial startup money or in any buying of it's stocks... and try to extort it's owners. It's a racket. And like the mob, they come in and basically say "Hey.... you've got a really nice business you've built up here.... it would really be a shame if something bad were to happen to it. Don't want anything bad to happen? Then acquiesce to our demands and pay up!".

If you want to share in the profits then you must share in the risk....and buy stocks in the company. They just want the rewards and none of the risks. The lessons of the childrens book "The Little Red Hen" comes to mind.

If a company can't retain employees due to their low pay, low benefits and bad workplace conditions.....they will improve them due to market forces or go out of business. If there are people that are willing to put up with it, then that's the free market at work. If you think you can make a better company to work for than them, then you find others of a like mind as you, pool all your money together, start a company and compete. Simple as that.

This move by Union Pacific is just a hollow public "that-a-boy" PR campaign and nothing more. The companies that are more likely to actually appreciate their employees typically are privately owned that don't have to answer to the demands of the owners of publicly traded stocks.

Personally I think the whole idea is simply virtue signaling. Not much different than the UP #7400 Susan G. Komen pink ribbon for breast cancer locomotive. All feel good. little substance. **!!2cents!!**
EMD 2-strokes rule! My all time favorite: SD45X also love the SD40-2/SD40T-2/SD45-2/SD45T-2/DD35A/DDA40X/SD70ACe/SD80ACe

Personally, I think the first one embodies employee pride - since it depicts employees working, you know. The other two don’t make any sense and just leave you thinking, “huh?”. How can employee pride be connected to a generic livery with stripes, with the only suggesting feature being a slogan? Granted, the one in the middle is neat, but it still doesn’t make a point.

Nonetheless, it should be interesting to see what comes out of this. It seems the graphic designer(s) didn’t consider how the l and e in “people” on the third unit are sitting right on the dynamic brake grid... hmmmm.

EDIT - it appears the second one has some employees on it, as well. I couldn't see it on my phone screen. Comment retracted. *!lol!*

Dear moderators
Can we cut the politics and stick to the hobby. We all have our own opinions on life and politics but we do not need to use the RWA forums as a soapbox.

I don't see any politics here. A bit of union bashing but that's not politics at least on this side of the pond and we are all about letting people have their opinions as long we keep it civil.

I like the second one. If done right, the colors would show up sharp. As long as they add some Armour yellow in it.
