News on Tools?

I have watched the progress of TSW since I purchased it at the release this year and have seen much improvement, others may not agree. The ones who expected a perfect, ready to play out of the box without any bugs most likely are in that category. It has been a very ambitious endeavor for DTG. Using the UE4 engine and with the amount of physics required has caused a lot of issues but I feel they are working through them. The last update took almost 30 days to release but DTG took their time and in my opinion did a good job proofing the patch before releasing. The proof is that there were not a lot of negative impacts this last release. I believe they will keep chipping away at these issues.
As to uninstalling I do not see a reason to do this unless one feels that drive space is too valuable. I have 8.5 Tb so for me it is not an issue. I play TSW 5-10 hours a week with a total of 315 to date. For TS, 3-5 hours per week with 1572 hours to date.
Yes there is a lack of scenarios, the ability to edit or create routes or scenarios and no free roam but I would like to see the time spent to improve the game before releasing more DLC. It will take time but it will get better. For me it was money well spent.

I agree with you, AmericanSteam. I'm a fan of passenger railroading, having traveled with Amtrak all over the USA, two to three trips a year, for the last 30 years. With this new sim, however, I'm enjoying the freight side of railroading also. It has quite a few bugs, but, Dovetail Games are working on it.

Other than not having much to do on it (CSX) I have no problems with it either. I am not a physics nut or rivet counter, I just like to imagine running real trains and it is good enough to entertain me.

Given it relies on an entirely different development platform and game engine unfamiliar to the dev team,
that DTG was able to publish a game with this quality in such a short time is impressive.
I think if you've been a developer you appreciate more what happens behind the scenes.

Also, when you decide to go with an off-the-shelf game engine, you get benefits and limitations. You lose some control over what can and cannot be modeled.

Now if I was DTG, I'd use this first version as a test lab and gather as much feedback as I could, holding off new content as much as possible, because version 2 might end up very different from version 1, and some heavy changes could be required to the data structures, making content from v1 incompatible with v2.

TSW has been in development for like 3 years according to DTG. What has been achieved so far is about as best as one can get in the graphics, but a train simulation is more.
The UE4 game engine and architecture are under constant development, and it's probably hard for any game studio to keep up.

Wether the choice of UE4 for TSW over a redevelopment of the current TS is best in the long run has yet to be seen. Using a proprietary engine and architecture means one has full control over it.

Most of us want to tinker, create and build trains or routes themselves. Wether and when DTG will bring the promised tools?

Without any user creativity input, TSW has no lasting appeal to me.

PS: that Crossties Studio also developing a UE4 train simulation (Jointed Rail from Trainz) ... haven't heard from them in ages....

Everyone has their own opinion of what a simulator is like or supposed to be. Like I said, it is entertaining to me. Sorry it isn't for you. Maybe someday your expectations will be full filled.

I remember another simulator that used the slogan "As Real as It Gets", I think train simulator is very much the same in that respect, but to expect it to be perfect, I think not. That could never happen when it comes to designing a simulator to make everyone happy. And that particular simulator stands testament to what happens when you try to make something for everyone and still try to make a profit. I enjoy TS2017, TSW, and Trainz for what they are as the developers created them, not as recreating real life, we have that, get off your duff and do some rail fanning trips if what you want is realism.

IIRC, other than basic object placement, tools came afterward.

But not too long after, matter of a few months.

So if these tools are ever released at some mysterious point in time, will there be a 3D Canvas/Crafter plugin that will enable exports like there is for TS20XX?
