What to do about AI collisions?

Unread postby _o_OOOO_oo-Kanawha » Sat Sep 23, 2017 1:40 pm

I purchased WCML Trent Valley in the September sale. It is a great looking route

I had an AI collision well into the first scenario I tried. It could've been due to my tardiness in driving in unfamiliar territory ...

Generally, how does one troubleshoot AI collisions?

open the scenario in the editor and hit the small play button not the big one. You can set the time it starts just above the buttons and the scenario will play itself. You can look in the 2d map at the AI or fly around the 3d map and watch to see what happens. If no collision takes place then it might be your running a bit late for the AI schedules.

Thanks for the lead, John, I'll try these first.

PS: Your sig tells you live in Ludington, MI. Do you remember the C&O and AA car ferries?

I moved here about 3 years ago. I work for Genesee and Wyoming and one of their railroads here (Marquette Rail) needed engineers so I transferred. We run the old C&O routes and one of the car ferries still operates during the summer shuttling people and their cars between here and Wisconsin. I'm about a mile and a half from lake Michigan. Beautiful area.

I realize that this sounds like a great idea, but it doesn't always work because the "dispatcher" runs all of the trains. Very seldom does a player drive the player train at the speed that the "dispatcher" would drive it and, since the pace of the player train sometimes affects that of AI trains, they may wind up running differently as well. You should also be very careful about stopping and closing this gizmo: be sure to pause the action and rewind it to the start (click on the < button) before exiting the editor. The only advantage of using whatever this gizmo is properly called is that you can see when two trains (AI or PT) are on the same track -- provided, of course, that you're in the right place to see them.

Thanks for the help.

My first step was to make sure the scenario plays OK, so I just started it, accelerated to 16x and sat back following my train.
The route is multiple track and there are some splits and joins of side lines.
When the fast forwarded scenario ended, I checked the entire map for any trains left standing, but there weren't any. All have vanished into the many portals that divide the main line into sections.
Everything went OK, so the scenario itself has no faults.

Tom is right, the timings of the player train are way too sharp and the resulting action unrealistic.
I will never be able to repeat the timings of the AI driver, racing about and using max throttle and brakes.
First I was required to put together a freight train at night with only the faint headlights typical of UK locomotives, from cuts of cars located in various sidings, before setting out on the main line and letting several expresses pass by.

I'll try to play the scenario again now I know what I am to do beforehand and probably won't arrive on the main line 20 mins behind schedule, *!rolleyes!*

You could also remove the offending asset with RW Tools, but that might make the scenario not work properly.
