Couplers.

Unread postby GenericZack » Thu Jul 27, 2017 3:29 pm

So ive been working on a 52' thrall gondola and ive gotten to the point where i need couplers. my few attempts at creating them have failed. is there anyway i could use the default kuju couplers on the car thru the blueprint editor? or is there another way to do this?
thanks.

Sure just look in a typical bin files and do that. All you will need to do is adjust the values to get them positioned properly. and of course put the couplings folder in your RailVehicles folder.

Hi,

Feel free to use my old coupler models if you want something that you can include in your own provider/product folders: http://www.golden-age-rails.com/downloa ... ouplers.7z -- this is from one of my model's source folder, please copy it to your own and edit the blueprint path references accordingly. Free to use in freeware models. The couplers lack a bit of detail compared to what some other modelers have produced, but they work okay and come with connecting brake hoses.

They use the same pivots offset as the original Kuju US couplers. To attach them to the wagon or loco blueprints, I recommend to input the pivot data manually and NOT use the gizmos in the 3D preview. Instead, using this little formula should give you properly working couplers (formula works for my and Kuju US couplers, might not work with other dev's couplers!)

Front/RearCouplingPivot = CollisionLength/2 - 0.475
Front/RearPivot = CollisionLength/2 + 0.275

Cheers
Michael

Can anybody use these couplers? I ask this because I'm having the same difficulty in modeling couplers for my models, these would really help me out a lot.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer.

Tutorial How to replace Knuckles.
Knuckles are what connects cars to other cars and is what is used to build a train. When it comes to creating rolling stock you can go two routes Prototypical and non prototypical. Prototypical means the model looks like it's real world counterpart down to the last detail which includes Steps, Lights, realistic horns, MU cables and air hoses, FRED, hand brakes, and graffiti. Non Prototypical is the opposite cars look like toys which they are not.

If you are going edit a car you need three items, Paint.Net, RW Tools, and the RS BIN Tool before you start work.

If you are going Non Prototypical look for the cars shape file in the Railworks directory for you car and copy it. Next copy all the BIN files the one your looking for is Coupler. By default the coupler is the KUJU model of the Jenny Type E knuckle this will be found in the KUJU folder under rolling stock and in the RSC under routes and rolling stock.

If your want prototypical you need to download some stuff first. Great Northerner and Gtrax are the creators of Stevens Pass all their cars have air hoses and MU cables. To change the file you need to download the cars from their websites and you must download Stevens Pass from Steam or the assets won't work. First find the car you want to edit and use RS BIN Tools to open the file. Make a copy before you do this. Scroll down to Coupler Front and Coupler Back and look for the word Provider, Product Name, and Blueprint ID. Next open the Great Northerner, Gtrax, or Stevens Pass file and look for a car. when you find the car you want open the BIN file in RS BIN Tools. Copy the file names Great Northerner, Gtrax, or GTNX and go to the other file and replace it with these names under Provider. in Product Name put in the name of their products. The final file to be changed is the Blueprint file for Great Northerner type in Buckeye, GTrax and GTNX type in AAR Type E. Now click Save open Train Simulator and install your car into the route. If your car has a FRED you need to download the FRED file from named ETD from the route that uses a FRED. and place it in the directory of the car your going to use.
