Forced FaceBook sign-in?

Unread postby OldProf » Sat Apr 29, 2017 9:38 am

Every once in a while a bout of boredom entices me to click on the Facebook icon on DTG's Train Simulator page. Lately, when I do this, a screen-wide white rectangle pops up demanding (no politeness involved) that I either sign in to Facebook or Sign up. I cannot find a way to dismiss this nuisance, which blocks the lower 1/4 of the screen. Has anyone else encountered this, or is the social media only bullying me?

Unless you are signed up to Facebook that is what you get. You cannot enter it even just to view it without signing up. I have no issues as I have been on FB since 2012. It is a great source of information and all the main TS sites have FB pages with lots of information that is not sometimes posted on their web pages. Yes I was skeptical at first about going on to FB.

Buzz it has nothing to do with the NSA. It's about Facebook making a buck off your browsing habits. They don't know who you are, they just know about you.

Verizon does this to me constantly with my phone and inserts tons of ads into the news sites I read, and even this site. Thankfully they do not count it against my data plan because some of those ads are bulky. At home I block all that crap in my HOSTS file and use ghostery. I avoid facebook just because I simply don't care for them.

If you sign up for FaceBook and set all the privacy settings as high as you can and you don't use it for anything other than checking out TS related pages that people mention here there won't be any tracking to be done. Further how in the heck do you get ads here? I have never seen one ever and yes I use Fire Fox exclusively except for the occasional sign on with my Blackberry. (Yeah I still use it for security purposes) and because I don't like Apple.

Verizon inserts them. It's crazy and does not happen here all the time. I'll take a screenshot when it does.

As for facebook not tracking what you view on their site, you are mistaken. They own the servers and the software. They take metrics from all the traffic flowing through their pipes. You don't even need to be logged in. Say if a new recipe for waffles makes it big on some TV show and it's on facebook. They can see where each person came from and how long the stayed.

One option to obfuscate that is By using VPN, but, even some not so reputable VPN providers will sell your traffic... Again you are logged into their servers running on their software.

This why there is the argument that if we are on the web we are not entitled to privacy, because there is no privacy.

Bingo! Which is why I try to minimize the intrusions on my privacy and ignore the rest. Facebook is a useful tool despite its many flaws. I jack my privacy settings and am careful who I follow. I never "type yes if you agree."

The only way to have privacy on the internet is to not use the internet. That ain't happening
