Quite simply, I like it. Your mileage may vary and probably will. I look forward to eventually playing with the editor and I suspect I'll be route building in both TSW and TS20XX for another 10 years.

Just bought an AMD RX-480 8GB graphics card for this and my performance ranged from 20 fps to 10 fps at night. Settings were on Medium, and 1920x1080. Will DTG eventually patch for AMD?

Thoughts from playing: A couple of bugs (AC4400CW right ditch light, incorrect brake wheel releases on freight cars), but at least the sim is workable. If anyone forgot bad Rail Simulator was before a legion of patches, it was pretty bad.

Hope the frame rate issue is improved soon, seems to be a deal breaker for several here.

I posted this in another thread here. Game won't load past the Microsoft C + + screen. Left it like that for 15 minutes, nothing.

As for people asking for refunds etc, this happens for all new game releases, people cannot wait for the fixes. When I get mine going and it doesn't perform, I well just leave it on my PC and go back and play TS2017 until the fixes come out.

For how long have we been waiting for various fixes to TSXXXX ?.
In the next Steam sale, when everything has been fixed, I will buy it at half price. who's fooling who ?.

Some more interesting things about physics.

I took the AC44CW out in Service Mode, and loaded up the coal train at Rockwood. It's 2 engines and 50 loaded cars. Now, yesterday I mentioned that 30-40 cars took 35 seconds to bring to a halt with the emergency brake. I accidently missed the alerter doing 33mph. It took 55 seconds to bring to a stop, while bailing the independent.

The models look great as well as the scenery, the sounds leave a lot to be desired, as do all the DTG sounds, ( where is MLWAudio when you need them) but these to will be reworked in time, if not by DTG then by you tinkering bunch of wahoos.

Hey man, I offered and they told me they had some "expert" contractor record for them instead.

He used wet paper sacks to record the sound and engineer it into the game apparently. Seriously...

Just imagine how impressive this would actually be with B&O 2-10-2's and the impressive EM-1's as B&O intended Unfortunately I think the days of steam are at an end (or more accurately wont actually start in this sim)

Ok, I just don't get the asking for a refund thing. You have the game, and it's borked. You paid a discounted price for it, and there will be ongoing updates. so WHY would you ask a refund, then when it is fixed, have to buy it all over again? Let sit on the hard drive and collect magnetic dust, then play it when it's fixed.

Because by Christmas 2018, it will go on sale for 9.99$

I think Searchlight was initially going to do the sounds, but it sounds like DTG didn't want to spread the wealth, so they did sounds in house, and I hear they came up short again.

As promised, more detailed initial thoughts.

Installation - easy, just RMB on the game in the Steam Library and hit install. I did think it had gone pear shaped during the initial setup and all I could see was the desktop screen, then it just suddenly opened.

Could have done with the options screen to appear before it launched the first tutorial.

As regards graphics, went with the default the game picked, other than enabling vsync. As I've "only" got an I7 4770 and a GTX950 2Gb GPU, didn't want to push it. No major performance issues noted though I didn't get that far out of the yard, having played the first two tutorials then started snow and ice. Need to test in a variety of situations, time of day, weather etc. Pleasant enough but I have to say not a vast change (improvement) over a good quality TS20xx route in the latest version of the game engine. Cabs look good though, compared to TANE which still relies on the 2001 Auran era cabs for some of the motive power. Guess at the end of the day, we're not expecting the train sim equivalent of GTA V or Fallout 4. Also how will the graphics engne stand up in a complex inner city area, on the approach to a 15 platform terminus such as Paddington with trains and track everywhere.

Sounds, seem okay with traction thrash, though being in the yard I will reserve comment on the track sound.

Physics. Now this is where things (maybe) started to crumble a bit. Running light engine, I put the throttle in Notch 1, brisk acceleration to 10 MPH at which the speed just held itself. Please don't tell me DTG have perpetuated the "DCC" speed cap for each throttle position that blighted their DMU physics in classic TS. In Snow And Ice, finally hooked up to my train, brakes released and Notch 3. Nothing happened, no movement other than a brief 0.5 MPH flicker on the speedo. Initial thought was, ah good they've implemented Run 8 delayed release but on releasing the throttle the train started rolling back - on a 0.2% (1 in 500) gradient! Checked the indy was released (yes), climbed down out the cab and checked handbrake released (yes). Back in the cab, the only way I could get the train to move was gunning the throttle in Notch 6 almost in the red sector. I'm sure that's not prototypical.

Gameplay. As already predicted, lots of achievements popping up everywhere, rather irritating. I can certainly see controversy from allowing people to wander around the "live" railway, despite the disclaimers that pop up as a professional railwayman I really feel uneasy about this. It will just take one youngster getting cut in half on a depot and it coming out he was influenced by TSW, to see the whole thing get pulled. DTG need to rethink this aspect.
Many of the scenarios involve a fair bit of shunting or switching. I can see the terminally impatient who just want to get out on the main line and thrash the trains, getting bored very quickly. In Snow and Ice, there was no indication of where you needed to go to reach the front of your train. I worked it out in the end, but not before trundling aimlessly up and down various sections of line first. Map view (9) is definitely your friend, note you can also change points/switches from this view which avoids the need to climb down from the train.

Overall: Pretty much as expected, some good bits, some warts. It's not going to replace any of the other sims overnight or even at all. At least until we get the editrs, it's essentially a DTG style World Of Subways but with freight trains. Worth about what I paid for it and will be keeping, not getting a refund, if only because it's better to be on the inside testing and suggesting fixes than bellyaching as a third party.

I eventually got TSW to load. Did the brief tutorial at the beginning on how to move around and a short drive in one of the locos (don't know which one as most American locos look the same to me.) Then I start a scenario don't know the name but was part 1 where you had to fill the coal hoppers up. Just drove up to the coal loader and stopped as I had other things to do. Was getting 45FPS. Ran very smooth. Hadn't touched the graphics settings Using default. Seemed a lot smoother than the beta.

Hand holding is one of the most irritating things in modern game design, and the mandatory non-skippable tutorial right on opening of the game is a fine example of that. If I want to jump right into a locomotive and start pulling in the "Services" mode or do a scenario, I should have had the option to do so.

As a rail,

I guess I'm a bit ambivalent. You can preach safety as much as you want in game, including making TEY Employees wear hard hats even though there isn't a railroad I can think of that makes us wear them ever. But if someone had the idea to wander through a railroad yard because they saw it in a video game, I'm afraid Darwinism had its hold on them long before they picked this up. Keep your disclaimers to keep the company non-liable, but don't force things on your player base that are bound to irritate them just because of a non-likely possibility.

Thanks for that Derek, I can see where BNSFDude is coming from too, but as we have seen in the past modern society does not accept the fact someone was a bit stupid or there was a hole in the boundary fence, etc. as sufficient excuse. It is called duty of care. There have been instances of kids getting sliced up doing graffiti on tube (subway) depots, steel wheels of justice some might say but the railway gets the blame.

To an extent we can wander in TS20xx using the 8 view but we know that is the disembodied "helicopter" and not FP as in TSW.

Certainly once British routes start coming out, where even railway people aren't allowed on the track without passing a personal safety course and rigorous medical (eyesight and hearing) exam, then yes some thought needs to be given to how this is controlled. On the "live" railway even drivers have to request a line blockage from the signaller of adjacent track before they climb down to (say) examine their train for a fault.

Edit: In fact I doubt any official UK railway body is likely to co-operate with DTG unless this aspect is curtailed. Somewhat surprised that CSX were agreeable, TBH.

Are all the UK licenses secure? This general security concern is probably not part of the license agreement.
Right of way is private property. No trespassing, etc, etc.

The same goes for Deutsche Bahn, DTG's Germany licensee.
