Repainting Questions

Unread postby ET44C4 » Wed Jan 25, 2017 4:26 pm

I've seen many great repaints for various locomotives and I've tried to make some repaints on the same locomotives. I tried repainting the ALCO S2 in the Alameda Belt line livery. My problem is when I repaint the locomotive and look at it in-game, I don't see any details that would be included. Look at my repaint for example

As you can see there are no details like rivets, panels, etc. Here is picture of a repaint that I found while searching the forums.

All the details on this repaint are there. Here is my question: how can you repaint a locomotive to show the details? This has been a big question that I have been waiting ask.

*I use Paint.net to repaint my locomotives and freight cars.

I don't know anything about repainting, but is it just because it's black, and all the details are as well? I suggest that you try painting one a bright color just to see.

No as you can see the yellow has no details on it. That can't be why. Thanks for asking though.

What settings do you have for the layer that you are painting. Generally I use multiply to add color and retain the features of the layer below.

Do you have the Stencil layer turned on? There is a stencil layer in each body part group that has these details in it.

I see where wlenz781 uses the "Multiply" setting for the new layer. I have not currently tried this method yet. I want to figure out how to get the "Stencil layer". For the Alco S2 I see two files for the main template, ro_master.TgPcDx and ro_master_LM.TgPcDx. Does the ro_master_LM.TgPcDx have anything to do with this "Stencil Layer?"

The "Multiply" setting only makes the paint transparent so I can still see the old repaint (in this case it's the "roll out" livery).

The multiply setting is great for repaints where you have to use the alpha channel as the template. The Alco S2 is one of the few repaints that has a Photoshop PSD file that you can edit. Have you looked at the Alco S2 repaint kit? It is the third option on the drop down list. When you open the .psd file, you will see several layers that will tell you what each one is.

I assumed you were using the template! Definitely get the template, it's one of the best around.
