21:9 monitors

Unread postby _o_OOOO_oo-Kanawha » Tue Oct 18, 2016 10:06 am

Does any of you use a 21:9 monitor?

I am looking into a wider view on my games and after testing some games in windowed 21:9 mode I like the wider angle.
Farming Simulator allows me to look into the rear view mirrors of most tractors for instande.

Concerning Railworks, I find some cabs like the SD40-2 quite claustrofobic, even when I play with a slightly wider 85 degrees FOV usually.

However, how does Railworks look in full screen on 21:9?

Can you post some screenshots showing the standard out of the cab forwards view using a few different cabs?

Is there visible perspective distortion near the screen edges, etc.

Thanks.

Hey there,

I have been using a 34" 21:9 for a while now. It looks great but you may want to use an FOV override to 90 or more to make it shine. I have mine set to 90 and then usually zoom in one step.

I don't have any cab shots on me right now, but here are some others:

I echo Alpenfreight. !!*ok*!! 34" 21:9 makes the sim shine. Been using it for about a year not only for TS but other games as well. I highly recommend going the 21:9 route.

Yes, framerate is less. I have a 960 and it runs pretty well.

Here are a few cabviews I shot after tricking Railworks into 21:9 windowed mode.

The SD40 cab doesn't have a wider view, just more perspective, i.e. it looks deeper?

When playing, the F4 HUD isn't full width, it is probably limited to 16:9 display scale.

By comparison, my favourite Farming Simulator seems to give me the desired wider viewport:
FS15_16to9.jpg

FS15_21to9.jpg

A wider view as I expect from a wider aspect ratio monitor, the view is also 'deeper' but without the pronounced "pointed" view of Railworks.

Where is the actual viewport of Railworks defined? In PlayerProfiles.bin inside the Content folder. PlayerProfiles.bin seems to be the main settings file.

This file makes the hud background go away. Much better IMO

Put this file in your Railworks>Data>Textures>frontend folder

Thanks.

I've got my 21:9 monitor now, a BenQ 35" 2560*1080 curved display.
I went for this large panel because of my middle aged eyesight and the fact that this size is 'relatively' easy on GPU's. A high DPI like 1440 or height causes me eyestrain, and the large number of pixels of high density displays drives frame rates of Railworks down to the minimum.

Still trying to find the sweet spot of SetFOV parameter, as the display has a smaller curve radius (7 ft) and is meant for racing games with a 90 degrees natural view.

What FOV is displayed when you zoom in to your favourite view?

Still, I don't think Railworks 17 is optimized for 21:9 displays. The Farming Simulator 2017 which was released today is, as are my other favourite ETS and ATS truck simulators.
Hopefully, things will be better in the UE4 game.
