TS future

I'm just curious, with the new game engine that's supposedly going to come out at some point, will TS still have a long road ahead in regards to compatibility with modern PCs in the 2020s? Personally, I hope it continues to get updated and supported, since despite it's bugs, it's not a hard game to get the hang of, once you've gone through the initial learning curve etc.

I'm thinking of building an Australian route that will be nothing like the line that starts at a small country town, and continues for 60 kms through an open arid environment to another one. This route will start at a major rural city (that's slowly becoming urban now), and require a lot of research and commitment to build it to standard. It starts at the coast, and heads south and west for as far as I'm willing to build. The hard thing about it is that the most appealing era to me to build it in is around 1900. It's one of my goals with route building, as it would be outstanding to have a version of this route for TS. The MSTS version was very popular, despite being built before there was DEM data available.

I've been wanting to do it for years, but it will be a very tedious project for me compared to placing houses/fencing in blocks for a short period. It may take over a year to complete.

Microsoft Train Simulator was released in 2001 and eventually abandoned by Microsoft. An active community has kept it alive ever since. At age 15 it is still being community supported and through Open Rails it is still being developed. I see no reason that Train Simulator 2016 will have any less community support in the future regardless of DTG's support or their new Train Simulator which will be a completely different product. I suspect a large number of us will continue to use this sim well into the future. The new sim will not be a replacement, it will be another choice.

For me, the new Unreal based sim will more likely replace Trainz than TS2016.

Trainz has an extremely powerful Session editor. There is nothing even close to it out there. To me that is it's greatest feature. What we wish for in TS2016 has been in Trainz all the while. When the new one comes out of DTG, it will just be a third Sim for me to tinker with, no replacement for another. And dont forget about the Jointed Rail guys working on another one also.

Has there been any updated info from DTG on the new sim? Other than some vague info released by them on its development a year or so back I haven't seen anything else about it.

Thanks trev123. That answer seems consistent with DTGs recent early fall release cycle. Sounds like a fall 2016 release may still be on schedule for "New Sim 2017."

I love it.

TS is usually released In late September. Here it is, a little more than eight weeks away and I've heard nothing about TS-2017. Is there going to be a new game engine this year !**conf**! Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, some kind of information from DTG Towers would be nice. AFAIK, no alpha whatsoever has been released?

Converting models to UE4 is only one step, creating a simulation at least equal to Railworks around the UE4 engine is probably quite another thing ....

I'd love to see some teasers or developer blogs but I know that usually opens the flood gates for questions and criticism. I get a bit spoiled by Paradox Interactive so waiting is a challenge sometimes.
