My Beaumont Hill trip Nov. 22-23, 2015 (my 4K video of it)

Unread postby GSkid » Tue Dec 08, 2015 4:11 am

So I brought my Sony FDR-AX100 4K camcorder on my first trip ever to Beaumont Hill in Southern California (Hack's stomping grounds) to upload my first 4K video to my YouTube channel. I did have some issues (read my full description on YouTube below the video for details). But it looks great....even in 1080p too! !!*ok*!!

Here's the link to the thread with my equipment list and pictures of my setup ....

I usually use my Sony Vegas Pro 13, but I used Cyberlink's PowerDirector 14 Ultra to edit and render this video. Although Vegas has some high end tools that the other doesn't, I'm gonna mainly use PowerDirector from now on for it's sheer speed. It will render videos 3x faster than Vegas. So this Beaumont Hill 4k video took 1 hour to render in PD14 that would have taken over 3 hours to render in Vegas. !*drool*!

Thanks guys for the nice feedback!

Yes...I am quite pleased with the camera. I do wish that it was able to shoot 4K at 60fps instead of just 30fps (I can shoot 60fps 1080p video at a 50Mb/s bitrate, but it's of course not in 4K resolution... which was the whole point of buying this camera in the first place). But the few cameras that do shoot 4k at 60fps cost $3000 and up and usually have as a trade-off a much smaller sensor than is in my camera. That means they capture 4K with a lower megapixel sensor and also perform worse in low lighting conditions than my camera. A bigger sensor also has a huge advantage in depth of field.

But at the same time.... 60fps 4K makes HUGE size video files and is a major bandwidth killer. Many people don't have a fast enough internet connection to stream 4K at 30fps.... let alone at 60fps. So I'm good for now. !!*ok*!!

I did film at Cajon Pass too on this trip and was gonna combine it with the Beaumont Hill clips. But in the end I decided not to cuz it would have nearly doubled the size of the video and it would have taken close to 4 days at it's full bitrate quality to upload to YouTube. My Cajon Pass clips have much worse vibrations in them cuz of the sometimes 35mph gusts blowing through the canyon from a cold front that was coming into the area.... and was buffeting the side of my camera really badly. Also....the shots weren't as diverse as I'd like, so I'll mix it up with some of my shots taken locally.

I'm going to Tehachapi Pass again a few days before Christmas. So I'll have a 4K video of that... but I'll be posting all my future stuff in the video section from now on. *!greengrin!*
