DXTBmp ?

Unread postby JohnS » Sun Oct 04, 2015 4:20 pm

I can't get the modified Alpha channel to save. I modify the Alpha and save then refresh. Save as DDS DXT3 and when I reopen the DDS texture the alpha is all white. Any ideas? I'm trying to make an all black alpha to remove numbers from locomotive.

Try saving it as a bmp.

BMP doesn't support alpha channels. Try TGA instead.

With all due respect, if you open a dds with DXTBmp and send the alpha to a editor, darken it and save it, then import it back to DXTBmp then save the whole thing as a dds it saves it with the darkened alpha.

I use RSBin Tool to covert the tgpcx to dds. DXTBMP opens the dds and sends it as a bmp to photoshop. You can edit the main bmp image or the alpha channel from dxtbmp. After editing in photoshop, save the files back to norm.bmp or trans.bmp. Reload your files back into dxtbmp and save them as a dds. Reopen them with rsbin tool and save as tgpcx.

It's not as hard as it sounds if you use the right tools and the right procedures. Btw, I used a LOT of trial and error when learning how to reskin with help from lots of RWA friends.

I use RWTools to edit the bin files.

Hope this helps,
Harry

My bad - I don't use the program. I was only commenting that BMP doesn't support alpha, but I also wasn't aware that DXTBmp uses two files to stitch into a new file. I should have paid closer attention to the above answers.

Nevertheless, it all seems goofy to me. *!rolleyes!*

I use RSBin to convert to DDS and have no problem messing with alpha channels. You might save a ton of work later on by figuring out what's going on with the original DDS faults, rather than to learn bad editing habits. **!!2cents!!**

I don't necessarily think these are bad editing. I think this depends on what you are using for your editing tool. Photoshop, gimp, and paint.net all have different procedures. There may be other editors that I don't even know about.

Photoshop CS should be the tool of choice now that you can get it for free.
