Windows 10 & Nvidia GPUs: WARNING!!

Is there any way to download Windows 10 and then perform a clean install? IMO, installing a new OS without wiping the disk off is just asking for trouble.

If you ever want to install any OS, just type the name of the operating system and then ".iso" without quotes into your favorite search engine .

I know.... where do I get the product key to upgrade? Is it the same as the one from a copy of 7 or 8, or does Microsoft give the new key sometime in the upgrade process? I am asking because although my computer previously used Windows Vista, my grandfather says he would let me trade Vista for one of his copies of 7 so I could upgrade to 10.... or could I simply start the update on one of his computers, get the product key, and use it on my own?

I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 and didn't need a product code. I used the upgrade process in the second link above as my initial download via Windows Update failed.

I is so happy with Win7. A couple of months from now I will see how everyone is doing. I do not understand the urge to be first on a upgrade such as this but different strokes................

You can try Windows 10 and have a month to revert back to Windows 7 if you so wish. I'm a sucker for anything new.

I've looked at quite a few Microsoft sites re Win 10, but haven't seen anything about being able to revert. Mind telling us where you found this info?

Well I am not going to even bother. Don't feel like wasting anymore time getting the Windows Update thing working. I will get Win 10 when I get a new comuputor some day. I like my Win 7 64 bit quite well.

In windows 10. Settings/Update and Security/Recovery/ Go Back to Windows 7. This option is only available for a month after you upgrade to Windows 10.

Well other than 10 not allowing my computer to go into sleep mode or shutting down properly (both have worked successfully only once), everything is ok so far. I either have to leave the laptop on or I have to cold boot from power off.

I got on a Windows 10 forum and started a thread on this issue. Another guy who also owns an HP Envy with a GTX 850M like me is having the exact same issue. Someone suggested he remove the Nvidia drivers. The guy was open to it since he said.... "Am not a gamer so I've discovered that my fancy graphics card does me little good anyway" (just begs the question...then why exactly did you pay the extra $150 to upgrade to that optional GPU!!! I know why I did....GAMES!!).

So he removed the Nvidia driver (making the 850M useless) and ran on the Intel graphics. Sleep mode and shutdown now functioned properly. The guy was happy... until 10 turned around and forcibly reinstalled the Nvidia driver on his next bootup and he's back at square one.

Not sure yet if it's an Nvidia issue beyond the HP Envy... but in the end it's an Nvidia issue for ME... albeit a small one.

Very rarely does a person need to reinstall Windows fully for any reason.

Before summer holidays I got myself a new and powerful laptop and it came with 8.1 pre-installed.
I wanted to wipe it clean, install 7 Ultimate and proceed with my games from there.
Unfortunately it arrived just two days before I left on vacation, so I decided to give 8.1 a try, installed Steam, got Railworks downloaded and left. I took a backup of my working USA install with me, and over the holiday got sort of used to 8.1, but only after I installed a program that reverted the start screen, start menu and stuff to like I was used to in 7.
Back home again, I didn't bother to wipe the HD and start anew, since the 8.1 has proved reliable. Haven't had a single BSOD thus far.

I will hold off from 10 until the nVidia problem has been satisfactory solved. With the Railworks "9" screen still broken with nVidia's latest drivers, I have backgraded to v350 something I think.

I still have an old laptop that runs W2K, MS's first true 32 bit OS, made lean and mean by removing all the MS crap. It has like 1 GB of ram, but is lightning fast in the simple office stuff I used it for.
Nowadays, Windows is so swollen from featuritis, I long back to the day of W2K when you could remove all the stuff MS deemed convenient for you.

Sleep mode works for me. The only thing that doesn't is Mail which is not a great issue as I use Windows Live Mail.
