Surfliner and New Haven Crashing

Unread postby DonR » Sat Dec 20, 2014 5:48 pm

Hi Guys,

I purchased the Train Simulator 2015 package today, but (at least) Pacific Surfliner and New York to New Haven are crashing. (I didn't try the European routes.)

I already had TS2015, but bought the latest iteration to get those two routes and a couple of add-ons that came with it.

These two routes don't show up in RW-Tools either, but I see the folders in the Assets subfolder.

Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks,
Don

Try a re-verify of the files? With both routes crashing, sounds like something got corrupted.

Oh, forgot to mention that... yes. I did a verify twice.

:(

I was wondering if something didn't download because I had TS2015 already installed. When I purchased Steam said something to the effect of: "you already have the following installed: 'undefined' "

That kind of bothered me, but I figured the verify would work.

Thanks

RW Tools won't show them if they are AP files. These need to be opened. I think RW Tools has a function to do this or use 7zip which you can download off the net. Just checked mine and they are AP files.

I have been having trouble getting the newer graphics driver to install. Nvidia's bloated installer fails when trying to copy files. I've even run it as admin and it still fails.

You may need to install the driver when you are in safe mode.
Uninstall the "old" driver via the Control Panel say NO if windows wants to install any drivers.
Boot into safe mode + networking: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/wind ... =windows-7
Start the NVidia driver and use "CLEAN" install - only install what you want ie driver and PhysX files and not the rest unless you are connecting your monitor via HDMI from the video card then install the NVidia audio drivers as well. Do not install GeForce experience unless you already use it for other games (no use in TS2015)

What are your system Specs MOBO, Cpu, RAM (how much), Hard Drive free space (when last defragmented not if SSD), OS 32 or 64-bit?

You are running the 32-bit version of Windows XP.
Two things you have only about 1GB of the Virtual Address Space for TS2015 to load into and you have less than 2GB of Physical RAM available and TS2015 for some routes needs 2GB of RAM and up to 3GB of Virtual Address Space.

You could try and use the 3GB switch this is how to do it:
Windows XP
To enable the 3GB switch:
1. Right-click My Computer. Click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
4. In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, under System startup, click Edit. The Windows boot.ini file will be opened in Microsoft® Notepad.
5. Create a backup copy of the boot.ini file. Note: Boot.ini files may vary from computer to computer.
6. Select the following line in the boot.ini file:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
Press Ctrl+C to copy the line and then press Ctrl+V to paste it immediately below the original line.

Note: Your text string may be different from the text string in this solution, so be sure to copy the text string from your boot.ini file, and not the text string included here.
7. Modify the copied line to include “ /3GB”, as shown in the following example:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /3GB /fastdetect
Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines.
8. Save and close the boot.ini file.
9. Click OK to close each dialog box.
10. Restart your computer.
11. During startup, select the 3GB option. If you do not select the 3GB option, the system will default to the 2GB total memory setting.

from: http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/a ... -XP-s.html
This will give you 3GB of Virtual Address Space minus the VRAM say about 2GB and TS2015 may load OK

My advice, Windows XP is out-dated so I would upgrade to a 64-bit OS and add an extra 4GB of matched RAM and that will fix any issues.
Your video card with 2GB VRAM is robbing the Win XP 32-bit system of VAS - it doesn't do that using a 64-bit OS.
Regards !!**sorry**!!

Thanks, Peter. I'll give that a shot.

I've been putting off an upgrade to Windows... I guess it's time to move ahead. Would you guys recommend 7, 8, or what's next?

If you like the 2015 interface better than 2014 you'll love 8.1 It's whole new pain in the butt to operate. However I have only set up and operated computers with it for a small amount of time but it's pretty silly IMHO. People do comment that it's really stable but I have found windows 7 to be just a great OS and much better than XP. Make sure you get the 64 bit of either. TS runs much better on the 64bit systems.

The 3GB suggestion worked. I ran Surfliner for a while then got a BSOD, though.

I guess it's time to do some upgrading. I'll start with the OS. I think I'll go with Win7 (64bit) unless someone has a compelling reason to do something else.

thanks for the help guys and Merry Christmas!

Thanks

Don
I'll second what BUZZ says.
I find that Win 8.1 Upd1 uses far less resources than Win 7 and is just as stable.

Windows XP is very quickly becoming insufficient as time goes on. I really love Windows 7, but I am getting use to 8.1 fairly quickly. If you do get 8.1, I highly suggest you download and install "Classic Shell". It gives you a start menu of your choice, including XP's. I've yet to have any problems with my games and programs working with the latest OS.
