Where are the B units?

Unread postby Ericmopar » Fri Nov 07, 2014 4:51 am

After looking at some old photos and digitized videos, it suddenly dawned on me, we have no GP, SD or GE based B units for use in the mountains and yards.

Things like this.

Dick has some Calf units but no B units. Well... F unit B units.
I'm talking about the home brew stuff U.P. ATSF, S.P. make in their own shops out of wreck leftovers. That is a short list. Most class 1s that have mountains seem to have those kinds of recycled units around.

Digital Train Models is releasing a GP30B with their upcoming pack. Other than that there is a pretty big void for road worthy B units.

I wonder if Eyein12 could be persuaded to lop the cab off of his GP60, and move the dynamic brake blister. That would at least cover ATSF & BNSF versions.

The gp60b's were actually ordered from EMD to run as gp60 a-b-b-a sets for high speed freight services on Santa Fe

The SD45-2B and SD40-2B units were all wreck rebuilds and on a per-railroad basis. BN only had 3-4 SD40-2Bs, IIRC. But they did have a butt ton of factory ordered GE B30-7ABs.
