Derek's site and freebies gone?

Unread postby Toripony » Fri Jan 31, 2014 8:06 pm

I went to Derek's site (http://www.dereksiddle.com/) just now to check that the APStations and/or UK Modelers paks (I think that's what they were called???) were still available but it looks like everything has been removed???

Is there anywhere else for new users to acquire those items? If not, I guess that's more stuff I'll have to remove from the Alleghany. Crappy... I really liked a few of those pieces, especially the water swan fuel points.

If you mail Derek, you could ask him permission to bundle those assets with the route. Or PM him here.

Just clicked on the link you provided to Derek's site. There's a sort of banner visible and the message, "Basic website under construction". Looks rather like he's moving house?

Thanks, Paul; it's worth a try. I guess I didn't even think of that because he declined when I asked a couple of years ago, but maybe that's changed now. It seems like there was never clear ownership of those assets between Derek and RSC.

If you're talking about the UK Buildings Model Pack, that used to be available on Steam at a small cost, for those who didn't already have it as a "legacy" asset.

But that also seems to have disappeared of late, I'm not sure when it actually dropped off the list. I'm wondering if the two things are connected?

Has Derek Siddle disappeared completely from the scene, or is he still around somewhere on the forums?

We just celebrated his birthday here and he said hi.

He's a long time employee of Dovetail.

Perhaps he could let everyone know what's happening with these assets then, and with his website (I've seen posts elsewhere asking about his site being down - or more accurately, blank apart from the header and a statement that it is under construction

I sent him a PM a couple of hours ago. Since he lives this stuff all week he may not answer until Monday.

Hi,
I'm never far away..

I replied to Tori but I don't mind saying what I said to her here.

The pack was a freebie and was created for the route building competition over on UKTS about 4 years ago.
It was hosted on steam for free RS.com were interested to see how it would do, but as you can imagine a lot has changed since then.

The Pack is still free but it is bundled with a large number of routes available from steam, so I guess you can look at it as not being free as such but still available, I will list out what routes it comes with when I check next week.

I hosted the pack on my own site for a number of years but it was creating a headache for our support team so I took it down.
While I made the assets in my own time for the intention of giving them away free, everything I create for RWs/TS (no matter if it was my own time or not) is owned by Dovetail/RS.com and I was only allowed because they said it was fine, I have always known that and when we were a smaller company we tried many new ways of interacting with users. Some worked well...some could have been better.

So regarding that pack it is just out there as an anomaly.

I have chatted to Tori and offered a solution to her problem.

regards

Hallo Derek,

My son is a big fan of Railworks and has asked me to help him chase down a library which is missing for several of his routes. I tried very hard and ended up here in this thread. The library goes by the name of either APStation or UK-Buildings Model Pack. As I understand it these are the same, and you are the author. I already tried to find the file on your website. Then I learned it should be a free DLC on Steam, but I cannot find it. According to other posts I have seen it should be included in several of the commercial Steam routes (some of which my son has), but again no luck.

Can you please help me to fulfill my mission and gather this library for my son?

By the way... sorry if I am using phrases like routes and libraries incorrectly - I am more a flightsim person myself :-)

Thank you very much for your help!

Best regards
Martin
