Well all you can really do is start from a known location. And work from there. When I was laying the track for the Feather River I found a bridge on the track chart that had a elevation right dead square in the middle of the crossing :) lucky. So I knew my altitude and location in both my decals (now google overlay) and on my DEM. I just worked it out from there. Followed the grade in the track charts and the line on my decals. And I found my DEM was shifted maybe 10 meters or so as I progressed down the line. I still might go into Microdem and shift the whole thing to get it better aligned, though it's hard to tell once the embankments have been cut in.
