Norfolk Southern Piedmont Division {WIP}

Unread postby Noel » Sun Oct 20, 2013 6:14 pm

I am finally going to stop procrastinating and start on a major project for Railworks.

I am doing the Norfolk Southern Piedmont Division. If you don't know what it is, go look it up.

Even though the pictures I posted don't look like much, it is a start to it.

I'll post more pics as I go with the route. !!*ok*!! !!*ok*!!

These first pictures are where Pleasant Garden, my hometown, will be.

Spur Road Railroad Crossing. The road goes off to the right to a small gas station. The road thengoes and crosses Pleasant Garden Road.

Davis Mill Road Railroad Crossing. Before the crossing, on the left hand side of the road, there is an old boiler plant, and another side road leading to a neighborhood. The road then goes and merges with Pleasant Garden Road.

Ritters Lake Road Railroad Crossing. Here, before the crossing, there is an abandoned house, and some abandoned barns. After the crossing, it goes and crosses Pleasant Garden.

Will you be using DEM data for this route? Or are you going to lay hills manually...

I cant usew DEM Data, as my virus software, both of them, classify it as adware, so it won't let me use it because it automatically deletes it. So DEM is out of the question.

I am using the Google Earth integration to lay track, scenery, and what not.

And I also can't do terrain manually. That's why I am doing the route super flat. There is just way too much terrain editing to include all of the hills and dips on this route. Only major dips and hills will be added.

!!**sorry**!! Just too much terrain to be put in.

Why not ask someone to make the terrain bits for you, and you can copy the BIN files in?

That's a possibility. What I might do is do a super flat version with the small terrain edits, and then get someone to do the actual terrain and re-do the route again. !!*ok*!!

Then a lot of your track could be buried or flying.

Why not just get the DEM now and do it once?

Anyone know if the USGS derver is back on line? If so then I, or 3 or 4 others on this board can make DEM for you. We just need a route trace in google earth.

I always get my DEM data from this site: http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version1/

And isn't there a way to temporarily disable your antivirus so you can download the terrain files?

So, I am really turning this into a huge project.

I am doing two versions:
-The Super-Flat Version (version I will finish first)
-The All-Terrain Version (Will include all terrain details)

The route will run from Ashville, NC, to Winston Salem, NC, to Greensboro, NC, Burlington, NC, Durham/Raleigh, NC, and Rocky Mount, NC.

From Ashville, it will run to Roanoke's NS Shops and Yard and will also run to Greensboro.. In Greensboro, the line branches in three directions. It will go all the way down to Siler City, the branchline that is behind my house. In Greensboro, at the Southern Railway Passenger Terminal, the line splits and will also run up to Lynchburg, VA. The line then runs to Burlington and Durham/Raleigh, and Rocky Mount, NC.

I will also include the line down through High Point, NC, Lexington, NC, Salisbury, NC, Concord, NC, and will go into Charlotte, NC.

I just got back from a 4 day trip to Cape Hatteras to enjoy the sun and the ocean, so I haven't made any progress. !!**sorry**!!

I am going to start work on it again soon, just have to unpack.
