Now that we've got chassis trailers thanks to danpmeyer I'd like to include a container transfer at the transload on my route but on a very small scale ie. a couple of cars on a siding loaded by a forklift... the kind of thing that in NZ we'd consider a major operation lol. I've looked everywhere on the interweb and can't find anything. I was wondering, in the US are there any VERY small container terminals and if so what cars do they use? Let's say, a small siding, maybe a modern team-track, where a single container would be loaded by forklift or maybe a swing-arm trailer. Surely there must be cars used smaller than well cars?

I live by the ports of San Pedro and Los Angeles, and I also do volunteer work at the USS Iowa, across the channel from where the containers get loaded. I have yet to see a regular TOFC get loaded. It's all containers, big and small, and huge crains. Even the small 20f containers use the big well cars. Big containers, 48f I think, can use the same well cars. The port doesn't care. They pick it up and put it on a huge ship.

I think G Trax has some double stacks, but they are most likely well cars.

FYI the gtrax stack and passenger cars are now in the RWA library.

Nope , with the possible exception of some municipal waste transport . Greenbriar have these http://www.gbrx.com/Flat_Cars.php?expandable=0 (see the middle pic) for Intermodal/waste.

yea those would be easy makes for RW, the first one is called a Road Railer, and the second is called a Rail Runner. Road railers were a more eastern type of thing and the rail runners were common everywhere and still are found here and there if you watch carefully.

I haven't seen a FrontRunner flatcar in over ten years, Im pretty sure there all gone now. RoadRailers are becoming rare too.

Yeah, I can't recall anyone seeing the frontrunners in ages , but maybe there a handfull still living. Was'nt there talk of Roadrailers being scrubbed ? .

Seems that the idea of of RoadRailer type equiepment is pretty much dead , neither the Railmate or Railrunner systems ( the later maybe it's close to what NDORFN is looking for ) gained much NA support ,though maybe Railrunner can gain a small foothold in the EU to go with the Indian 10 year deal.

Roadrailers aren't rare, just gotta know what line to look on. The NS Fostoria District and Water Level Route have quite a few roadrailers in each way. I know Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois have them and UP and BNSF run a few.

I was thinking more of innovation , hence the reference to the Railmate and RailRunner systems . I can see Railroaders on my line anytime.

Ohhh my bad, well yea I haven't seen a TTOX railrunner since I was 7.
