Repainting locomotives

I thought I would have a bash at reskinning some of the BritKits locos - Shays, Mikado etc. I am quiet impressed with the "colour" of the HSC K4's - is it possible to copy the colour of the K4's to use as the basis of the texture repaint for the Mikado for example? Not sure if I have made myself clear, but I hope so... I find the BritKit locos a bit grey and thought I would darken and weather them up. I also could do with a pointer in adding loco lights, but that will be the next project...
