Scanning for the Future

Unread postby harryadkins » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:21 pm

I picked up a copy of the latest issue of Railroad Model Craftsman today (March 2012). It has a nice article on modeling ACL gondolas that caught my eye. There is also an article (page 65) called "Scanning for the Future" by James Ankrom that might be of interest to 3D modelers. The author was part of a project to produce 3D scans of a former Southern Railway steam locomotive on location. The scans were produced by a Leica C10 Laser Scanner. Rapido has been exploring this technology to produce molds for its models, and it seems to me the same techniques can be used to help produce 3D models for Railworks. If you are interested, pick up a copy of the magazine or check out the article on Rapido's website (http://www.rapidotrains.com/blog/2011/11/). Video of the entire process is available on www.rrmodelcraftsman.com for subscribers.
