Western Pacific heavy wt passenger cars

Unread postby buzz456 » Tue Feb 13, 2024 6:40 pm

I have been planning to do a set of WP cars for the upcoming Feather river expansion for those who would really like to go back in time however I haven't been able to find any pictures of any color schemes. Any of you RR history folks have any idea if they had the old Pullman cars in any color other than that oh so boring Pullman green?

The Pullmans were p, you guessed it, Pullman green. In later years certain cars wore the two-tone “pool scheme”, especially bedroom rebuilds (OAK, CLOVER, COLLEGE, etc). Western Pacific had their own coach green, an interpretation of Pullman green, which I think was slightly closer to ATSF’s version, but not quite as olive.

I hope this helps although it is mostly conjecture, I am afraid, without drift cards and specific CCR paint schemes.

Excellent reference material. Of note: a donation to the WP Museum will get any information that you ever wanted to know about the WP.

How about this? This was listed as an office car.

It will be in the pipeline as soon as I know somebody doesn't object to this paint scheme. That's one of the few pics I found to use to design this. I found one way faded picture of this paint job but it seems to be largely lost except for this observation car which I am not sure if these guys ever actually existed in the roster.

I will confess I was unaware this scheme was ever used in revenue passenger equipment, thinking it only saw office car usage towards the end. It is certainly an interesting scheme, although naturally I prefer the all over Pullman as WP 653 wears at Rio Vista. This would look nice behind green and orange Fs, I can only assume.

A little research seems to show the green and orange scheme being adopted in the mid-late 1960s. I quite like the green and orange canvas “awning” to match the paint, seen on No. 1, which I believe passed to UP, and was the last WP car in service.

The 653 was one of several solarium cars with a small platform for aesthetics. Some cars, on the C&O for instance, had the platform with a diaphragm through it, rendering it totally unusable. The 653 one is shallow and not for use, but someone physically could step out onto it, unlike the C&O examples (one of which was eventually shadowlined in faux stainless).

I hope this helps.

I was not claiming it was not, I was simply saying I had not seen it in passenger service, I figured this skin was based upon such evidence. I have only ever seen 2 or 3 office cars in it, 1 plus a 100 series car. The very last heavyweights could have worn such, I am not saying they did or did not, as I have not researched it, just that the orange came quite late.

I hope all is well,
