Just a suggestion if I may: Once the location of the numbers is determined, and you begin changing the color to "white"; please consider toning down the brightness so it is more in line with the brightness of any white logos or data stencils that appear on the railcar, especially the weathered ones. Far too often, many railcars in the sim feature road numbers, typically from a shared folder, that are far too bright. They may be okay for a factory-fresh paint-job, but most of the sim's stock has some degree of weathering, so these numbers appear out of place unless the company set about a re-numbering program with freshly stenciled numbers. In addition to modifying the number's brightness, it is also possible to apply a weathering layer to them, just like weathering the paintwork on the railcar; although due to the size-scaling of the numbers in relation to the railcar, it is sometimes necessary to "up-scale" or re-size the weathering on the numbers so they will be a better match to the weathering on the railcar once they are applied by the sim.
The above suggestion can even apply to black numbers as well, as evidenced by your screenshot in the first post; the lighter shade of black on the road number versus the darker black used for the stenciling.
Again, this is just a "while your at it" suggestion. If it turns out to be a pain to implement, then don't worry about, it's not a show-stopper. I'd rather see you finish your repaint than get bogged down trying to "re-invent the wheel" and get discouraged. Repainting is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun.
One other note: If you change those black letters to white and they are in a shared folder; keep in mind that unless you create a new naming convention and apply it to the corresponding geo or bin files, for the newly converted "white" numbers, any railcar that requires the original black numbers will now be white; so on a white or light grey railcar for example, the previous black numbers will now become practically invisible after being converted to white. On a lighter note (pun intended), it should be possible to "target" an existing folder full of white numbers with similar fonts, even if it's for a different railcar; but I will defer to Buzz for that one, as it's been a while since I've done any repaints.
Please don't forget to answer Buzz's question about the model. Good luck.
