Basic Repainting Question

Unread postby pkz19 » Tue Jun 13, 2023 5:51 pm

To change the logo on the S2, since there isn't a separate logo file, you have to paint right over the existing text correct? There isn't something in the file you need to edit?

Also, with the S2 in particular, usually the handlebars are all whole and separate when opened in the .tgpcdx file, do I just repaint the corresponding squares for this one?

Yes you paint the squares for the various objects. Here is a template to use for your main body.

Am I am painting the right thing? I made a reskin of the master texture file and did everything following the instructions in this video, which has always worked before, but in this case nothing shows up, it stays the same even though I changed it to the new master file

Like I said, following this video has worked for other models, like the AS616 I've also been messing with

For decals you use the RSBin tool to export the DDS file then MISS out the DXTBmp step and go straight to the Paintnet and OPEN the DDS file and you will see the decal. Save in the reverse not using the DXT step. In the Paintnet edit section there is a Erase Selection, put a box around the part you want to change click on erase selection and then put in the text/logo etc you want.

So it's like one big decal that goes over it?

First - have you created a file for the engine you want to end up with e.g. "Steelworks"? If not pick one of those in the S2 folder - in mine I have 86 to choose from. Pick one that has some semblance to what you want to achieve such as color of the handrails (just to save you some work no point painting what is painted) then copy the whole file (copy and paste). Change the name to what you want to end up with. Open the folder and then click on the .bin file (RS Tools) Change the name of the engine to the name of your folder (e.g. Steelworks) using Ctrl C, Ctrl F and Ctrl V then hit Replace all. Save (top left box or Ctrl S). If you want a ND version do similar. Then load up the game and check that the Assets box has Alco S2 Steelworks showing and that it loads (still in the original colors and number scheme). If that works then go to Textures and repaint as the tutorial. Changing the number system is a little more complicated but not too bad.

Good luck and persevere. Make sure you backup what you are dabbling with when you start and as you go.

Alternatively send me the texture and the name you want to use and I'll do it for you, have a go if you can though, it is frustrating to start and satisfying when it works.

Thank you John, I really do appreciate you taking the time to reply and help me out. I've followed this video a few times before, and everything has worked for me before, but this time in particular with the Alco S2, I just somehow can't get my repaint to show up in the game.

Send me your file (PM) and I’ll take a look to see if I can find the problem.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, and am playing around with logos now.

Is there a good tutorial on how to do numbering?
