Hey guys I decide to get back into repainting, but I never repainted trains before and I have a question to ask:
How do you paint the body of the locomotive without painting over the ridges of the sides and messing it up?
eg: the Gtrax GP40

You paint in a different layer. The real trick isn't "how do you paint", it's "how do I extract the ridges from the original paint", which is a bit more complex & needs some knowledge of what paint packages are capable of first ( ie, practice ). But basically you're aiming to remove the colour and then use what's left as an overlay.
Your best bet would be to start by painting one of the engines that has a paintkit, like the GP38, or any of the britkits vehicles which have a painting kit; once you have an example of how overlays work, you have a head start on making your own.

Throwing in my

but I learned a lot by (re)starting with the new bonus wagons over at Micheal Stephan's
Golden Age of Railroading. His newer models include repaint kits that have all the layers separated for you, legend and exterior mapping.
I say restarting because I started with the RWA donationware, but some of those wagons are a bit challenging to start out with, and I really cut my teeth on the new bonus wagons.
