Partially Enclosed Autorack

Unread postby TheKman » Sat Jan 23, 2021 2:57 pm

Here's my latest model. A partially enclosed autorack. I don't think anyone has made one of these for the sim yet. There are many variants of these cars. I honestly have no clue as to what exactly this one is let alone if the car number is right...... It's been rather hard finding any detailed info on open autoracks. I designed it based of a MSTS SLI model from the Feather River Freight Set.

One slight problem with the blue print. Model didn't show up in the preview window. I don't think it's 100% aligned to the point or origin. I don't know why, but this happens to me almost every time on the first try with a new model. So a slight adjustment on the point of origin should fix it.

I'm not sure I'll make a rack with autos. First off is the polygon hit. Second, I can't design a auto if my life depended on it. 3D Warehouse is a option, but it would take a lot of milking it down to get to a accepted polygon count.

And I gather making a child object from shapes of autos from the sim won't work unless I have the source model and good luck on that if it's a commercial vender.

If you can get this into the sim I have a friend that might be able to help in adding in some of my cars as a child object.

Also a request, would really like to see a classic open auto rack from the 50's and 60's as well.

It's in the sim being tested. Some minor changes need to be made. Car sits a wee too high. Couplers are a bit high compared to other cars. The D&RGW Orange is a bit loud in the sim. I need to darken it up a bit. What kind of autos are we talking about? For these racks I'm thinking 70s to mid 80s autos. These cars operated up till the mid 80s on many railroads. I've never worked with child objects. Will it be easy to add the object to other cars? (Is a a child object similar to a FA for MSTS?) I plan on more paint schemes.

I have plans to design the open racks from the 60-70s. There are a ton of variants I can do. One issue I have is fonts for the older cars. Pete Willard's site doesn't have fonts for those type of cars. I plan on contacting Pete to see if he'll make some for me.

I find a lot of that stuff by just doing a internet search like 'Milwaukee Road logo' or 'Milwaukee Road font' and something will pop up that's usable. Often the font is something you can add to your own font collection from one of the many free font sites.

The F89-F was introduced in 1966 in Bi-level and Tri-Level and no corrugated siding. That siding was added due to experience ( bad as can be imagined ) Note: corvettes exposed to the elements, falling rock, flying debris, vandalism
The last great models of the F89-F in a Train Sim were by Diesels West for MSTS. So yes these would be very appreciated!!! Note: I saw theses things lasting into the early 90s. Image Image ImageImage Image
